Abstract

This study assesses the impact of community internships on the clinical skills and confidence levels of nursing students in Buea. Community-based internships are an essential component of nursing education, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, enhance practical skills, and build professional confidence. In the context of healthcare in Buea, these internships provide valuable exposure to diverse cases and resource-limited environments, fostering adaptability and competency among future healthcare providers.

A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving both quantitative and qualitative data collection. A total of 100 final-year nursing students from three nursing schools in Buea were surveyed using structured questionnaires to evaluate perceived improvements in their clinical skills, including patient assessment, critical thinking, and procedural techniques. Additionally, semi-structured interviews with 20 students were conducted to gather insights into the role of internships in enhancing confidence and managing patient interactions effectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics for quantitative findings, and thematic analysis was used for qualitative responses.

The results indicated that 85% of students reported a significant improvement in core clinical skills following their internship experiences, with patient assessment and practical procedures being the most improved areas. Confidence levels in performing independent tasks and making clinical decisions also increased in 78% of students, although some students cited difficulties in adapting to certain high-stakes situations. The qualitative analysis revealed that hands-on experience, mentorship from senior health professionals, and exposure to real-world patient care were key factors contributing to the development of clinical competence and confidence. However, challenges such as limited resources and occasional inadequate supervision were noted, which affected the students’ overall experience.

The study concludes that community internships positively influence nursing students’ clinical skills and self-confidence, essential for their transition into professional roles. To maximize the benefits, nursing schools and healthcare facilities should address resource and supervision limitations, ensuring that internships provide a conducive learning environment. Structured internship programs that incorporate mentorship, regular feedback, and well-defined learning objectives could further enhance the impact on students’ skill development and professional confidence. These findings support the integration of community internships as a foundational component of nursing education, contributing to a well-prepared and competent nursing workforce.
