Abstract

This study assesses the knowledge of youths aged 18-24 on the prevention and proper control of waste disposal in the Mile 16 community of Buea. Waste management is a critical issue impacting health, environment, and community well-being. Youths play a vital role in promoting effective waste disposal practices, making it essential to evaluate their understanding of this topic. The study aims to identify gaps in knowledge and promote awareness regarding sustainable waste management.

A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted, targeting  youths aged 18-24 in the Mile 16 community. Participants were selected using purposive sampling to ensure diverse representation in terms of gender, education level, and socio-economic status. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, which included sections on waste disposal practices, knowledge of waste segregation, and understanding of the environmental impacts of improper waste disposal.

Findings revealed that while a significant portion of respondents (70%) recognized the importance of proper waste disposal, only 40% were knowledgeable about effective waste segregation techniques. Moreover, awareness of local waste management policies and community resources was low, with only 30% of participants being informed about existing waste disposal services. Many respondents (65%) expressed concerns about environmental pollution and its effects on public health, yet only 20% actively participated in community clean-up initiatives.

The study highlights the need for targeted educational interventions to enhance youths’ knowledge about waste disposal and management practices. It is crucial to implement awareness campaigns focusing on the significance of waste segregation, recycling, and the health implications of improper waste disposal. Engaging youths in community projects and workshops can foster a sense of responsibility and ownership regarding waste management.

In conclusion, improving knowledge and awareness of proper waste disposal among youths in Mile 16 is vital for promoting sustainable practices and enhancing community health. By equipping this demographic with the necessary knowledge and resources, it is possible to cultivate a culture of responsible waste management within the community.
