Abstract:

This study evaluates the effectiveness of training and development programs as tools to increase organizational performance in Cameroon, focusing on three prominent organizations: Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC), National Refining Company (SONARA), and National Electricity Company (ENEO). Training and development are crucial components of human resource management aimed at enhancing employees’ skills, knowledge, and competencies to improve organizational effectiveness. This research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining surveys, interviews, and performance data analysis to assess the impact of training initiatives on employee performance, job satisfaction, and overall organizational outcomes in these companies.

Background to Study

Training and development play a pivotal role in enhancing the capabilities of employees and driving organizational success (Noe, 2017). In Cameroon, organizations such as CDC, SONARA, and ENEO operate in critical sectors and face challenges related to skills gaps, technological advancements, and evolving market demands. Effective training and development programs are essential for these organizations to remain competitive, adapt to changes, and achieve sustainable growth.

CDC is a key player in agribusiness, focusing on palm oil, rubber, and banana production. SONARA operates in the petroleum refining sector, while ENEO is a major electricity supplier in Cameroon. These companies require skilled workforce to optimize operations, innovate, and meet customer expectations. Training programs tailored to the specific needs of employees in these sectors are critical for building a competent workforce capable of driving organizational performance.

The Cameroonian context presents unique challenges and opportunities for training and development initiatives. Limited access to advanced training resources, budget constraints, and varying skill levels among employees are some of the challenges faced by organizations (Kamoche et al., 2011). On the other hand, investing in employee development can lead to improved productivity, employee engagement, and organizational resilience (Saks & Haccoun, 2016).

Statement of Problem

Despite the recognized importance of training and development, organizations in Cameroon, including CDC, SONARA, and ENEO, may encounter obstacles in effectively implementing and evaluating training programs. Challenges such as inadequate training infrastructure, lack of alignment between training outcomes and organizational goals, and limited employee participation in training activities can hinder the desired impact on organizational performance (Hartung et al., 2019).

The problem statement revolves around understanding how training and development initiatives contribute to increasing organizational performance in these companies. Key issues include identifying the most effective training methods, measuring the impact of training on employee performance metrics, and aligning training efforts with strategic objectives and organizational culture (Noe, 2017). Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive assessment of training practices and their influence on organizational outcomes.

Research Questions

  1. What are the prevailing training and development practices in CDC, SONARA, and ENEO?
  2. How do training programs impact employee performance, job satisfaction, and motivation?
  3. What is the level of alignment between training outcomes and organizational goals in these companies?
  4. What are the challenges and barriers to effective training and development in CDC, SONARA, and ENEO?
  5. How can training and development initiatives be optimized to enhance organizational performance in these organizations?

Objectives

  1. To analyze the current training and development practices in CDC, SONARA, and ENEO.
  2. To assess the impact of training programs on employee performance, job satisfaction, and motivation.
  3. To evaluate the alignment between training outcomes and organizational goals in these companies.
  4. To identify challenges and barriers to effective training and development.
  5. To propose strategies for optimizing training and development initiatives to enhance organizational performance.

Hypothesis

Null Hypothesis (H0): Training and development programs have no significant impact on organizational performance in CDC, SONARA, and ENEO.

Alternative Hypothesis (H1): Training and development programs positively impact organizational performance in CDC, SONARA, and ENEO.
