Abstract
This study assesses the conflict management skills of nurse tutors in basic schools of nursing in Buea, Cameroon. Conflict in educational settings, particularly in nursing schools, can significantly impact both the learning environment and the professional development of student nurses. Effective conflict management by nurse tutors is crucial for maintaining a positive and productive learning atmosphere, fostering healthy relationships, and preparing future nurses to handle conflicts in their professional careers.
The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with nurse tutors from various basic schools of nursing in Buea. The study evaluates the tutors’ knowledge of conflict management theories, their ability to identify and address conflicts among students and faculty, and the strategies they use to resolve disputes. It also explores the challenges nurse tutors face in managing conflicts and the impact of their conflict resolution skills on student outcomes and the overall learning environment.
Preliminary findings indicate that while most nurse tutors have a basic understanding of conflict management principles, there is a variation in the application of these skills in practice. Some tutors demonstrate strong conflict resolution abilities, employing strategies such as open communication, mediation, and collaborative problem-solving. However, others struggle with effectively managing conflicts, often due to a lack of formal training in conflict management or insufficient institutional support. The study also reveals that unresolved conflicts can lead to a negative learning environment, affecting student morale, academic performance, and overall satisfaction with the nursing program.
The research highlights the need for enhanced training and professional development opportunities in conflict management for nurse tutors. Recommendations include incorporating conflict resolution modules into the nursing education curriculum, providing ongoing workshops and seminars for tutors, and fostering a supportive institutional culture that encourages effective conflict management practices. By equipping nurse tutors with the necessary skills and resources, the study aims to improve the quality of education in nursing schools and contribute to the development of a more harmonious and conducive learning environment.
