Abstract
This study assesses the educational needs of hypertensive patients at Buea Regional Hospital, Cameroon. Hypertension is a prevalent chronic condition that requires effective management through lifestyle modifications, medication adherence, and regular monitoring. Patient education plays a crucial role in empowering individuals to manage their condition, yet gaps in knowledge and understanding can lead to poor health outcomes, including complications such as stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure.
The research employs a descriptive cross-sectional design, involving hypertensive patients receiving care at Buea Regional Hospital. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and interviews, focusing on patients’ knowledge of hypertension, including its causes, risk factors, symptoms, and complications. The study also examined patients’ understanding of hypertension management, such as the importance of medication adherence, dietary modifications, physical activity, and regular blood pressure monitoring. Additionally, the study explored patients’ preferred methods of receiving health education and the perceived barriers to accessing and applying this information.
Preliminary findings indicate that while many patients are aware of their hypertensive status, there are significant gaps in their knowledge regarding effective management strategies. Some patients lack understanding of the importance of lifestyle changes and medication adherence, leading to suboptimal control of their blood pressure. Common barriers to effective education include low literacy levels, cultural beliefs, and limited access to tailored health information. The study also reveals a preference among patients for interactive and culturally sensitive educational approaches, such as face-to-face counseling and community-based programs.
The research highlights the need for targeted educational interventions to improve the management of hypertension among patients at Buea Regional Hospital. Recommendations include the development of comprehensive, patient-centered education programs that address the specific needs and challenges of hypertensive patients, the use of culturally appropriate materials, and the integration of family and community support into educational efforts. By addressing these educational needs, the study aims to enhance patient empowerment and improve health outcomes for individuals living with hypertension in the region.
