Abstract

Postoperative complications are a significant concern in patient recovery, impacting both morbidity and mortality rates. The role of patient carers in managing and preventing postoperative complications is critical, as they provide essential support and follow-up care. This study aims to assess the knowledge and practices of patient carers regarding common postoperative complications, such as infections, blood clots, respiratory issues, and wound care, at the Buea Regional Hospital.

A cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted with patient carers who assist post-surgery patients at the hospital. The survey questionnaire focused on assessing carers’ awareness of postoperative complications, understanding of risk factors (such as limited mobility, hygiene practices, and dietary needs), and practices in monitoring and managing symptoms that may indicate complications. Data collected also included carers’ demographic information, prior training in caregiving, and sources of postoperative care information.

Preliminary results reveal that while some patient carers have basic knowledge of postoperative complications, there is a notable deficiency in specific areas such as infection control, recognizing signs of deep vein thrombosis, and the importance of early mobilization. Additionally, findings suggest that carers who have received guidance from healthcare professionals exhibit better postoperative care practices and a higher level of awareness of potential complications. However, a majority lack structured training or access to resources, impacting their ability to adequately prevent and manage complications.

This study highlights the need for improved support systems at the Buea Regional Hospital, including caregiver education programs and printed care guides on postoperative complication management. Empowering patient carers with the necessary knowledge and skills is essential for enhancing patient outcomes and reducing the risk of complications following surgery.
