Abstract
This study examines midwives’ practices in the use of obstetric maneuvers and their impact on labor and delivery outcomes at Buea Regional Hospital. Proper application of obstetric maneuvers is crucial to ensuring safe deliveries, reducing maternal and neonatal complications, and improving overall healthcare quality during childbirth. This study aims to assess the types of obstetric maneuvers midwives commonly use, their proficiency levels, and the resulting impacts on labor and delivery processes.
A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed, with midwives selected through purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted through structured questionnaires and observational checklists, allowing for the assessment of both self-reported practices and actual maneuvers used during deliveries. Statistical analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistics to identify patterns in maneuver types and their outcomes.
Findings reveal that the most frequently used obstetric maneuvers include the Leopold’s Maneuvers, McRoberts Maneuver, and controlled cord traction. Midwives’ proficiency levels in these maneuvers varied, with approximately 60% demonstrating high competency, while 20% required further training to ensure safe and effective application. Outcomes of deliveries where midwives employed correct maneuvering techniques showed a reduction in the incidence of complications, such as shoulder dystocia and retained placenta. Conversely, limited proficiency correlated with higher rates of prolonged labor and perineal tears.
These findings underscore the importance of continuous training and capacity-building for midwives in obstetric maneuvers to enhance delivery outcomes. Recommendations include regular workshops and practical simulations aimed at improving skills and knowledge retention, ultimately fostering a safer labor and delivery environment for both mothers and newborns.
