ABSTRACT
This study investigates the knowledge and practices of nurses concerning immediate post-operative care for patients in Limbe and Buea Regional Hospitals. Post-operative care is critical for ensuring optimal recovery and preventing complications following surgical procedures. However, the effectiveness of this care largely depends on the proficiency and adherence of nursing staff to established protocols and best practices. Through a comprehensive examination of nurses’ understanding and implementation of post-operative care protocols, this research aims to identify areas of strength and areas needing improvement in the provision of care. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining surveys and interviews to gather data from nursing staff working in the surgical units of the two hospitals. Key aspects under investigation include nurses’ knowledge of post-operative care protocols, their adherence to established guidelines, and any challenges encountered in the delivery of care. The findings of this study are expected to provide valuable insights for enhancing the quality of post-operative care delivery in the study hospitals and potentially inform the development of targeted training programs to address identified gaps. Ultimately, improving nurses’ knowledge and practices in post-operative care has the potential to enhance patient outcomes, reduce complications, and optimize the overall quality of surgical healthcare services in the Limbe and Buea regions..
Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Surgical care is a crucial component of healthcare systems worldwide, with millions of individuals undergoing surgical procedures annually to address a wide range of medical conditions (Weiser et al., 2015). However, the success of surgical interventions is not solely determined by the procedure itself but also by the quality of post-operative care provided to patients during the immediate post-operative period (Myles et al., 2007). Immediate post-operative care encompasses a series of interventions aimed at monitoring patients closely, managing pain, preventing complications, and promoting early recovery following surgery (Duncan et al., 2017).
Nurses play a pivotal role in the delivery of post-operative care, as they are often responsible for the direct provision of care to surgical patients during the immediate post-operative period (Wong et al., 2009). Their knowledge, skills, and adherence to evidence-based practices significantly influence patient outcomes and recovery trajectories (Gillespie et al., 2010). However, studies have indicated variations in nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding post-operative care, which can impact the quality and safety of patient care delivery (Gillespie et al., 2010; Gillespie & Hamlin, 2009).
In the context of resource-limited settings such as the Limbe and Buea regions of Cameroon, challenges in surgical care delivery, including inadequate infrastructure, limited human resources, and disparities in access to healthcare services, may further exacerbate the complexities of post-operative care provision (Makasa et al., 2016). Additionally, cultural beliefs, language barriers, and socio-economic factors may influence patients’ perceptions of surgical care and their willingness to adhere to post-operative instructions (Makasa et al., 2016).
Despite the critical importance of post-operative care, limited research has been conducted to assess the knowledge and practices of nurses specifically concerning immediate post-operative care in the Limbe and Buea Regional Hospitals. Understanding the current state of nurses’ knowledge and practices in these settings is essential for identifying areas of improvement and implementing targeted interventions to enhance the quality of post-operative care delivery.
Moreover, as healthcare systems continue to evolve, there is a growing emphasis on patient-centered care and evidence-based practice, necessitating ongoing evaluation and optimization of nursing care practices (Institute of Medicine, 2003). By addressing gaps in nurses’ knowledge and practices related to post-operative care, healthcare facilities can improve patient outcomes, reduce complications, and enhance overall surgical care quality.
Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap by comprehensively assessing nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding immediate post-operative care in the Limbe and Buea Regional Hospitals. Through a thorough examination of nurses’ understanding of post-operative care protocols, their adherence to established guidelines, and any challenges encountered in care delivery, this research endeavors to provide valuable insights for enhancing the quality and safety of post-operative care provision in these healthcare settings.
Problem Statement
The delivery of immediate post-operative care represents a critical phase in the continuum of surgical care, profoundly influencing patient outcomes and recovery trajectories. Despite its recognized significance, the quality and consistency of post-operative care delivery by nurses remain areas of concern, particularly in resource-constrained settings such as the Limbe and Buea regions of Cameroon. Various factors, including limited resources, inadequate training, and systemic challenges, may contribute to suboptimal post-operative care practices among nursing staff in these regions. Furthermore, the complex interplay of socio-cultural factors, patient preferences, and healthcare system dynamics further complicates the delivery of effective post-operative care.
The lack of comprehensive research specifically examining nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding immediate post-operative care in the Limbe and Buea Regional Hospitals represents a significant gap in the existing literature. Understanding the intricacies and challenges faced by nurses in providing post-operative care is imperative for identifying areas of improvement and implementing targeted interventions to enhance the quality and safety of care delivery. Furthermore, the limited availability of evidence-based guidelines and standardized protocols tailored to the context of these healthcare settings exacerbates the challenges faced by nursing staff in delivering optimal post-operative care.
Moreover, the consequences of inadequate post-operative care extend beyond immediate recovery issues, potentially leading to prolonged hospital stays, increased risk of complications, and heightened healthcare costs. Patients undergoing surgical procedures in these regions may face heightened vulnerabilities due to disparities in access to healthcare resources, socio-economic constraints, and cultural beliefs influencing healthcare-seeking behaviors. Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach that considers the unique contextual factors shaping post-operative care delivery and integrates strategies to enhance nursing competency, improve resource allocation, and promote patient-centered care practices.
Furthermore, as global healthcare standards continue to evolve towards emphasizing quality, safety, and patient-centeredness, the imperative to address deficiencies in post-operative care delivery becomes increasingly urgent. By elucidating the factors influencing nurses’ knowledge and practices concerning immediate post-operative care in the Limbe and Buea regions, this study aims to contribute valuable insights that can inform policy development, curriculum revisions, and clinical practice guidelines tailored to the specific needs of these healthcare settings. Ultimately, enhancing the quality of post-operative care delivery holds the potential to improve patient outcomes, reduce healthcare disparities, and optimize the overall effectiveness of surgical care in resource-limited environments.
