Abstract
This study assesses the knowledge of pregnant women regarding the importance of ultrasound during pregnancy at the Yoke community in Muyuka. Ultrasound is a crucial tool in prenatal care, providing vital information about the health of both the mother and the fetus. Understanding its significance can enhance maternal and fetal health outcomes. This research aims to evaluate the level of awareness among pregnant women regarding ultrasound benefits, risks, and availability, as well as identify factors influencing their knowledge.
A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted involving pregnant women in the Yoke community. Participants were selected using convenience sampling to ensure a diverse representation of age, educational background, and parity. Data collection was carried out using structured questionnaires, which included questions on the purpose of ultrasound, its timing, and the potential health benefits and risks associated with the procedure.
Results indicated that a significant number of respondents (65%) recognized the primary purpose of ultrasound as a tool for monitoring fetal development. However, only 40% of the participants were aware of the recommended timing for ultrasounds during pregnancy. The majority (75%) acknowledged the importance of detecting potential complications early, yet only 50% could identify the specific conditions that ultrasound can help diagnose. Educational background and previous pregnancy experiences significantly influenced knowledge levels, with women having higher education demonstrating better understanding.
The study highlights the need for enhanced educational programs targeting pregnant women to improve their knowledge about ultrasound’s role in prenatal care. Health care providers should engage in community outreach initiatives to inform women about the timing and benefits of ultrasound. Additionally, integrating information about ultrasound into prenatal education can empower women to make informed decisions regarding their pregnancy.
In conclusion, improving pregnant women’s knowledge on ultrasound’s importance in the Yoke community is essential for optimizing prenatal care. Increasing awareness can lead to better health outcomes for mothers and infants by promoting timely and appropriate use of ultrasound during pregnancy.
