ABSTRACT

This study assesses the teaching strategies utilized in selected inclusive primary schools in Buea, Cameroon. Inclusive education aims to integrate students with diverse learning needs into general education settings, requiring effective teaching strategies to accommodate various abilities.

A mixed-method research design was employed, combining quantitative surveys of teaching practices with qualitative interviews of educators, administrators, and parents. The study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of different teaching strategies in meeting the needs of all students, including those with special educational requirements.

The findings indicate that several teaching strategies are employed in inclusive classrooms, including differentiated instruction, collaborative learning, and the use of assistive technologies. Differentiated instruction was found to be particularly effective in addressing diverse learning needs by tailoring lessons to individual students’ abilities. Collaborative learning strategies, such as group work and peer tutoring, also supported positive interactions and learning outcomes among students with and without disabilities.

Challenges identified include the need for ongoing professional development for teachers, limited access to assistive technologies, and insufficient support from school administration. Educators reported that while the strategies are beneficial, more resources and training are necessary to implement them effectively.

The study concludes that effective teaching strategies are crucial for successful inclusive education. Recommendations include providing comprehensive professional development for teachers, increasing access to assistive technologies, and enhancing administrative support for inclusive practices. These measures can improve the quality of education for all students in Buea’s inclusive primary schools.
