Abstract

Patients living with a urinary catheter often face challenges that can significantly impact their quality of life. This study assesses the quality of life (QoL) of patients with urinary catheters in Buea Municipality, Cameroon, and examines associated factors that may influence their overall well-being.

A cross-sectional study was conducted with 200 patients currently using urinary catheters at healthcare facilities and community settings within Buea Municipality. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire designed to measure QoL, encompassing physical, psychological, and social aspects. Additionally, patients were asked about their experiences with catheter use, including comfort, complications, and support received.

The study found that the overall QoL of patients with urinary catheters was notably affected by various factors. On average, patients reported moderate to low QoL scores, with physical discomfort and limitations in daily activities being prominent concerns. Physical factors such as pain, leakage, and catheter-related infections were reported by 60% of the participants, which adversely affected their physical health and daily functioning.

Psychologically, 45% of patients expressed feelings of embarrassment, anxiety, and frustration related to their catheter use. The impact on self-esteem and social interactions was significant, with many patients experiencing reduced social engagement and emotional distress. Social support was a critical factor; those with strong support from family and friends reported better QoL compared to those with limited support.

Healthcare-related factors also played a role. Patients who received comprehensive education and ongoing support from healthcare providers reported better QoL scores. Conversely, patients who faced difficulties with accessing healthcare services and had insufficient guidance on catheter care exhibited lower QoL.

Socioeconomic factors, including income and access to healthcare resources, influenced QoL as well. Patients with lower income levels and those facing financial difficulties reported more significant challenges in managing their condition and achieving a satisfactory QoL.

In conclusion, the quality of life of patients with urinary catheters in Buea Municipality is significantly impacted by physical discomfort, psychological stress, and social and healthcare-related factors. Addressing these issues through improved patient education, enhanced healthcare support, and better access to resources can help mitigate the negative effects of urinary catheter use and improve patients’ overall well-being. Strategies to enhance QoL should focus on holistic care approaches that address both the physical and emotional needs of patients.
