Abstract

The rise of electronic banking (e-banking) has revolutionized the global financial landscape, providing banks with new opportunities while introducing a set of challenges. This study focuses on the challenges and opportunities of electronic banking, with a specific case study of Ecobank Cameroon. The research seeks to analyze how e-banking has been adopted by Ecobank, its impact on the bank’s operations, customer service, and overall competitiveness in the Cameroonian financial market.

The study adopts a mixed-method approach, collecting data through surveys distributed to bank customers and interviews with bank employees and managers. Quantitative data from the surveys provides insight into customer satisfaction, usage rates of e-banking services, and common challenges faced by users. Qualitative data from interviews helps to understand the internal perspective of the bank on issues such as infrastructure, regulatory compliance, security, and service delivery.

Findings reveal that Ecobank Cameroon has made significant strides in adopting e-banking services, offering online banking, mobile banking, and ATM services. The key opportunities provided by e-banking include improved convenience for customers, increased transaction speed, expanded market reach, and reduced operational costs. Through e-banking, the bank has been able to provide 24/7 access to financial services, enhance customer satisfaction, and tap into new customer segments, particularly among tech-savvy and younger generations.

However, the research also uncovers several challenges that Ecobank Cameroon faces in its e-banking operations. One major challenge is the issue of cybersecurity, with frequent cyber threats posing risks to both the bank and its customers. Many customers expressed concerns about the safety of online transactions, citing the risk of fraud and data breaches. Additionally, the limited availability of reliable internet infrastructure in some regions of Cameroon affects the widespread use of e-banking services, particularly in rural areas. Another challenge is the digital divide, with a segment of customers, particularly the elderly or less tech-literate, finding it difficult to navigate electronic platforms.

Regulatory challenges also emerge, as the evolving nature of e-banking calls for continuous updates in legal frameworks and compliance requirements. Ecobank Cameroon must regularly update its systems to meet Central Bank regulations and ensure the security of its digital platforms. Moreover, technical issues such as system downtime, network failures, and software glitches occasionally hinder seamless service delivery.

In conclusion, while e-banking presents numerous opportunities for Ecobank Cameroon, it also comes with significant challenges. The bank must address security risks, improve customer education on digital services, and invest in stronger IT infrastructure to optimize e-banking services. Additionally, continuous regulatory compliance and addressing regional disparities in internet access are essential to fully capitalizing on the opportunities provided by e-banking. By overcoming these challenges, Ecobank Cameroon can further enhance its market position and continue delivering high-quality services through digital banking platforms.
