ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate Challenges Faced by Female Journalist in Sports Reporting. The study was significant because it sheds light on the often overlooked challenges faced by sports journalists, particularly female journalists and findings of this research will help the Media houses to take a better look from the advantage point of gender fairness and make a difference that may be observed among male and female in reporting sport news and programs. Three research questions were designed for the study. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire. A descriptive survey design was used with a sample of 10 Female Sports Journalist and the data was analyzed using frequency, percentages and an average of the percentage of results was used to confirm the entire three objectives. Based on the findings of this study, given these results therefore, recommendations and suggestions for further studies were made.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

An indisputable fact that is known is that women or female journalists are mostly broadcasters and a handful go in for sports reporting. Therefore this entire project is out to explain some of the challenges female journalists face in sports reporting. This chapter will consist of the background of the study, statement of the problem, research questions, hypothesis, objectives of the study, significance of the study, scope of the study and definition of key terms.

1.1 Background of the Study     

The background of the study will be brought forth using. Historical, conceptual, theoretical and contextual angles.                                                   

According to the Association for Women in Sports Media (AWSM), (2008) , since the beginning of sports reporting in many countries it has been seen as a male bastion. The historical context of female participation in sports journalism provides valuable insights into the challenges faced by women in this profession.

Historically, opportunities for women to report on sports were limited, with their roles often confined to writing about fashion or covering human interest stories related to athletes rather than delivering comprehensive sports coverage. However, over time, there have been significant milestones and developments that have opened doors for female journalists in sports reporting. For instance, pioneers like Mary Garber became trailblazers for women’s inclusion in sports journalism during the mid-20th century. The establishment of organizations such as the Association for Women in Sports Media (AWSM) further supported gender equality initiatives within the industry.

Conceptually, gender stereotypes play a crucial role here as societal expectations often dictate traditional gender roles and perpetuate biases against women pursuing careers in certain fields – including sports journalism. Moreover, studies have shown that media representation can reinforce these stereotypes or challenge them. The under representation of women’s voices and perspectives within mainstream media outlets can contribute to a lack of diversity within sports reporting.

 Theoretical lenses help us comprehend how underlying factors influence gender disparities within this field. Intersectionality theory by Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw (1989) suggests that individuals experience unique forms of discrimination based on multiple aspects of their identity such as race, class, or sexuality alongside their gender. Additionally, feminist theory focuses on power imbalances and the ways in which societal structures perpetuate gender inequalities. Applying these theories to sports journalism enables us to understand how systemic biases and discriminatory practices hinder the professional growth of female journalists.

Contextually, Hans C. Schmidt (2013) stated that despite some progress, women continue to be underrepresented in sports journalism roles, particularly in high-profile positions such as commentators or analysts. Discrimination remains a significant challenge for female journalists, with reports of unequal treatment, exclusion from male-dominated spaces, and limited access to resources and opportunities. Stereotypes surrounding women’s knowledge about sports also persist, undermining their credibility within the field.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The field of journalism has long been dominated by men, and this gender imbalance is particularly evident in sports reporting. The challenges faced by female journalists in sports reporting are vast and complex. From dealing with gender discrimination and harassment to breaking into a traditionally male-dominated field, female sports journalists encounter numerous obstacles in their careers. This  long essay on the topic, “Challenges faced by female journalists in sports reporting” will  explore the historical context of women in sports journalism, analyze specific challenges faced by female journalists today, discuss the impact of gender stereotypes on their work, and suggest ways to address these issues.

The main objective of this study was to find out the challenges and opportunities female Sports journalists face in reporting sport news stories and programs.

1.5.2.1 Examine the challenges that female Sports journalists are facing in reporting sport news and programs.

1.5.2.2 Examine how societal perceptions and stereotypes affect female journalists in sports reporting.

1.5.2.3 Point out the strategies and methods these female journalists use to evade challenges in sports reporting.
