Abstract

The tourism industry in Cameroon faces significant challenges due to the lack of basic services, which affects the sector’s development and visitor satisfaction. This study investigates the primary issues arising from inadequate basic services and their impacts on the tourism industry.

Infrastructure deficiencies are a major concern. Many tourist destinations in Cameroon suffer from poor transportation networks, including unpaved roads and unreliable public transit, which hinder tourists’ access to attractions. Additionally, the inconsistent availability of electricity and water services disrupts operations in hotels and lodges, affecting guest comfort and overall experience.

Healthcare facilities and emergency services are also inadequate. Limited access to quality medical care and emergency services in remote tourist areas pose risks to tourists’ safety. This lack of preparedness can deter potential visitors and affect the country’s reputation as a safe travel destination.

The shortage of trained personnel exacerbates these challenges. Many service providers in the tourism sector lack the necessary skills and training to deliver high-quality services. This deficiency impacts customer service standards and can lead to negative experiences for tourists. Furthermore, poor maintenance of tourism facilities, such as hotels and restaurants, contributes to dissatisfaction among visitors and affects the industry’s overall appeal.

To address these challenges, significant investment in infrastructure is required. Improvements in transportation networks, reliable utilities, and healthcare facilities are essential to support the growth of the tourism industry. Additionally, investing in training programs for tourism professionals can enhance service delivery and ensure that tourists receive high-quality experiences. Maintenance and upgrading of existing facilities should also be prioritized to meet international standards and attract more visitors.

Sustainable practices and better management strategies are crucial to overcoming these challenges. By focusing on infrastructure development, service quality improvement, and effective management, Cameroon can enhance its tourism sector, improve visitor satisfaction, and achieve long-term growth. Addressing these basic service gaps is essential for positioning Cameroon as a competitive and appealing destination in the global tourism market.
