Abstract

This study explores the challenges faced in the training of secretarial students in higher institutions in Cameroon. Secretarial training is essential for preparing students for the administrative and organizational roles they will take on in their professional careers. However, several obstacles hinder the effective training of these students, including outdated curricula, inadequate facilities, limited exposure to modern technology, and insufficient internship opportunities. This study aims to identify these challenges and propose recommendations for improving the training programs to better equip students for the demands of the modern workplace.

Introduction

The role of secretaries has evolved significantly in recent years due to the introduction of modern technology and changing organizational needs. Secretarial students in higher institutions in Cameroon must therefore be trained not only in traditional administrative tasks but also in the use of modern tools and techniques. However, the training they receive often falls short of these expectations. This study seeks to examine the specific challenges faced by secretarial students in higher institutions in Cameroon and to offer solutions that can enhance their training experience.

Research Methodology

A qualitative research approach was used to gather data from secretarial students, instructors, and administrators from various higher institutions across Cameroon. Semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with a sample of 100 participants. The study focused on identifying the main challenges encountered during the training process and analyzing the impact these challenges have on students’ readiness for the job market. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to uncover recurring themes and patterns.

Findings and Discussion

The study identified several critical challenges in the training of secretarial students in higher institutions in Cameroon. One of the most significant challenges is the outdated curriculum. Many institutions still follow a curriculum that focuses heavily on traditional secretarial tasks such as typing, filing, and shorthand. While these skills are important, they are no longer sufficient in the modern workplace, where secretaries are expected to be proficient in digital tools, project management, and other advanced skills. The lack of curriculum updates means that students are not adequately prepared for the realities of the job market, and they often struggle to meet employers’ expectations.

Another challenge is the inadequacy of training facilities. Many institutions in Cameroon lack the necessary equipment and resources to provide effective training for secretarial students. Computer labs are often outdated, with insufficient access to modern software and applications. This limits students’ exposure to the digital tools they will need in their professional lives. Additionally, the absence of well-equipped classrooms and training centers makes it difficult for students to practice the practical aspects of their training effectively.

The study also highlighted the limited exposure to modern technology as a major challenge. In an era where digital literacy is crucial, many secretarial students in Cameroon do not receive sufficient training in the latest office technologies. This is partly due to the lack of resources but also because of the insufficient emphasis placed on technology in the curriculum. As a result, students graduate with gaps in their knowledge and skills, making it difficult for them to compete in the job market.

Internship opportunities are another area of concern. Internships provide students with practical experience and a chance to apply what they have learned in real-world settings. However, the study found that many secretarial students in Cameroon struggle to secure internships due to a lack of partnerships between institutions and businesses. Even when internships are available, they are often poorly structured, with students performing menial tasks that do not contribute to their professional development. This deprives students of the valuable experience they need to transition smoothly into the workforce.

In addition to these challenges, the study identified the insufficient involvement of industry professionals in the training process as a problem. There is often a disconnect between higher institutions and the business community, which results in a gap between what students are taught and what employers expect. Involving industry professionals in the training process through guest lectures, workshops, and mentorship programs could help bridge this gap and ensure that students are better prepared for their future careers.

Conclusion

The training of secretarial students in higher institutions in Cameroon faces several challenges, including outdated curricula, inadequate facilities, limited exposure to modern technology, and insufficient internship opportunities. These challenges hinder students’ ability to acquire the skills and experience needed to succeed in the modern workplace. To address these issues, higher institutions must update their curricula to reflect the changing demands of the job market, invest in modern training facilities, and strengthen partnerships with businesses to provide students with meaningful internship opportunities. Additionally, involving industry professionals in the training process can help ensure that students are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to excel in their careers.
