ABSTRACT
This study examines the relationship between classroom management and pupils’ academic performance in selected primary schools in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. Classroom management refers to the strategies and practices teachers use to create an organized, productive, and conducive learning environment. Effective classroom management ensures that students remain focused, minimizes disruptions, and promotes better learning outcomes. The research aims to assess how different classroom management techniques impact pupils’ academic performance in primary schools.
A mixed-method approach was adopted, involving quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Surveys were administered to teachers and pupils to gather data on the types of classroom management strategies employed and their perceived effects on academic performance. Teachers were asked about methods such as seating arrangements, discipline enforcement, and time management. Pupils were questioned on their experiences and how they believed these practices influenced their learning. In-depth interviews with school administrators provided further context on the effectiveness of various classroom management approaches.
The findings indicate that strong classroom management practices have a positive effect on pupils’ academic performance in primary schools in Buea. Classrooms where teachers implemented clear rules, maintained order, and engaged pupils actively saw better academic results. Pupils in these classrooms were more motivated, participated more in lessons, and showed improved test scores. On the other hand, schools with less structured classroom environments faced challenges like frequent disruptions, which negatively impacted academic performance.
The study concludes that effective classroom management is essential for enhancing pupils’ academic outcomes in primary schools. Recommendations include providing teachers with professional development on classroom management techniques, establishing clear and consistent rules, and ensuring that teachers engage pupils through interactive learning methods. These improvements can significantly boost academic performance in primary schools in Buea.
