Abstract
This study presents a comparative analysis of different organic manures and their effects on the growth and yield of huckleberry (Solanum scabrum) in the Mount Cameroon region. Huckleberry is a popular leafy vegetable widely consumed for its nutritional value and economic benefits. However, maximizing its productivity remains a challenge, particularly in the context of sustainable agriculture practices. The study aims to assess how different organic manures influence huckleberry growth and yield, providing insights into best practices for organic farming in the region.
The research was conducted through field experiments using various organic manures, including poultry droppings, cow dung, compost, and a control plot without manure. Key growth parameters such as plant height, leaf area, and biomass were measured at different stages of the crop’s life cycle. Yield performance was also evaluated by comparing the quantity and quality of the harvested huckleberry. Soil analysis was performed before and after the application of organic manures to determine changes in soil fertility.
Findings indicate significant differences in the growth and yield of huckleberry across the different manure treatments. Poultry manure resulted in the highest growth rates and yield, followed closely by cow dung and compost. The control plot showed the lowest performance, highlighting the importance of organic manure application for improved crop production. The study also notes that the use of organic manures not only enhances soil fertility but also contributes to sustainable farming practices, reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers that can degrade the environment.
The study concludes that organic manures, particularly poultry droppings and cow dung, are effective in promoting the growth and yield of huckleberry in the Mount Cameroon region. These findings have significant implications for local farmers seeking to improve crop productivity through sustainable practices. The study recommends the wider adoption of organic farming techniques and further research on optimizing manure application rates for various crops in the region.
