Abstract
This study investigates the coping mechanisms employed by women with infertility who are undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in Buea, Cameroon. Infertility is often accompanied by intense emotional distress, social stigma, and psychological challenges. For women undergoing ART, the process can be both physically and emotionally taxing, further complicating their ability to cope with infertility. Understanding how these women manage their stress and emotions is essential for providing holistic support during the ART journey.
The research employs a qualitative design, utilizing in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with women undergoing ART at selected fertility clinics in Buea. The study explores the various coping strategies these women adopt, including both adaptive and maladaptive methods. It examines the role of social support from partners, family, friends, and healthcare providers, as well as personal strategies such as positive thinking, religious faith, and seeking information about their condition and treatment. The study also looks into the psychological challenges faced by these women, including anxiety, depression, and the pressure to succeed with ART.
Preliminary findings reveal a diverse range of coping strategies among the participants. Many women rely heavily on their faith and spirituality as a source of strength, often viewing their journey through ART as part of a larger spiritual test. Social support from partners and family is identified as a critical factor in maintaining emotional stability, though some women experience strain in these relationships due to the stress of infertility. Peer support from other women undergoing ART also plays a significant role, providing a sense of shared experience and understanding. However, some women resort to avoidance or denial as coping mechanisms, which can hinder their emotional well-being and complicate their ART experience.
The study underscores the need for comprehensive psychological support for women undergoing ART, including counseling services, support groups, and educational resources that address the emotional aspects of infertility and ART. By providing targeted interventions, healthcare providers can help women navigate the challenges of ART with greater resilience and improve their overall treatment outcomes.
