CULTURAL TOURISM AND LOCAL DEVELOPMENT IN KUMBO SUB-DIVISION

ABSTRACT

This study explores the relationship between cultural tourism and local development in Kumbo Sub-Division, located in the North West Region of Cameroon. Kumbo is known for its rich cultural heritage, which includes traditional festivals, craft production, and unique customs. The research aims to assess how cultural tourism contributes to economic growth, community development, and cultural preservation in the region.

A mixed-methods approach is employed, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews. Data were collected from local residents, tourists, and stakeholders involved in tourism development. The study examines the economic impact of cultural tourism on local businesses, employment opportunities, and income generation.

Findings indicate that cultural tourism significantly contributes to the local economy. The influx of tourists creates demand for local goods and services, benefiting artisans and small businesses. Moreover, cultural events, such as traditional dances and festivals, attract visitors and promote community pride. This interaction fosters a sense of identity and encourages the preservation of cultural practices.

However, challenges exist in the management of cultural tourism. Issues such as inadequate infrastructure, limited marketing efforts, and insufficient training for local guides hinder the sector’s growth. Additionally, there is a need for better coordination among stakeholders to create a cohesive tourism strategy that benefits the entire community.

The study also highlights the importance of community involvement in tourism development. Local residents should be actively engaged in decision-making processes to ensure that their needs and perspectives are considered. This approach can enhance social cohesion and foster a sense of ownership over cultural resources.

In conclusion, cultural tourism presents significant opportunities for local development in Kumbo Sub-Division. By capitalizing on its cultural heritage, the region can stimulate economic growth and enhance community well-being. However, addressing the challenges in tourism management and promoting community engagement are crucial for sustainable development. Policymakers and stakeholders should prioritize initiatives that strengthen the link between cultural tourism and local development to achieve lasting benefits for the community.
