ABSTRACT

Access to finance is a critical determinant of entrepreneurship in the agricultural sector, especially in developing economies like Cameroon. This study investigates the various factors that influence access to finance for entrepreneurs within this sector, focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities present in the Cameroonian context. Understanding these determinants is essential for enhancing entrepreneurial growth, improving agricultural productivity, and ultimately contributing to food security and economic development in the country.

In Cameroon, the agricultural sector is a significant contributor to the economy, providing employment for a large portion of the population and serving as a primary source of food. However, many entrepreneurs face substantial barriers in accessing financial resources necessary for starting and expanding their agricultural enterprises. This research identifies key determinants that influence access to finance, including institutional factors, financial literacy, collateral requirements, and the availability of financial products tailored to agricultural needs.

The study employs a mixed-methods approach, utilizing quantitative data from surveys of agricultural entrepreneurs and qualitative insights from interviews with financial institutions and policy-makers. The findings reveal that institutional factors, such as the regulatory environment and the presence of supportive financial institutions, play a significant role in facilitating access to finance. Entrepreneurs who understand the regulatory landscape and have strong networks within financial institutions are more likely to secure funding for their ventures.

Financial literacy emerges as another crucial determinant. Many entrepreneurs lack the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of financial systems, leading to underutilization of available financial resources. Training programs focused on financial management and business planning are essential for equipping entrepreneurs with the tools they need to attract financing. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of collateral requirements, noting that many smallholder farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs struggle to provide the necessary assets to secure loans. This often leads to exclusion from formal financial markets, pushing them toward informal lending options that may not be sustainable.

The research also examines the role of innovative financial products, such as microfinance and agricultural insurance, in improving access to finance. Financial institutions that develop products specifically designed for the agricultural sector can better meet the needs of entrepreneurs and reduce the perceived risks associated with lending. By tailoring financial services to the unique challenges of agriculture, lenders can foster a more inclusive financial environment that supports entrepreneurial growth.

In conclusion, the determinants of access to finance for entrepreneurship in the agricultural sector in Cameroon are multifaceted. This study underscores the importance of addressing institutional barriers, enhancing financial literacy, and promoting innovative financial products to improve access to finance for agricultural entrepreneurs. By creating a more supportive financial ecosystem, Cameroon can unlock the potential of its agricultural sector, fostering economic growth and enhancing food security. Future research should focus on assessing the impact of specific interventions aimed at improving access to finance in the agricultural context.
