ABSTRACT
This study explores the determinants of teacher motivation and performance in secondary schools within Buea Municipality, Cameroon. Teacher motivation is crucial for effective teaching and improved student outcomes. This research aims to identify key factors influencing teachers’ motivation and performance and assess their impact on educational quality.
A mixed-method approach was employed, integrating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Surveys were distributed to secondary school teachers and administrators to gather data on motivational factors, including salary, working conditions, professional development, and recognition. The survey also measured teachers’ performance levels and job satisfaction. Qualitative interviews with selected teachers and school leaders provided deeper insights into the challenges and supports that affect motivation and performance. The study reviewed existing literature on teacher motivation to provide a theoretical framework and context for the findings.
The findings indicate that several factors significantly influence teacher motivation and performance in Buea’s secondary schools. Key determinants include competitive salaries, positive working conditions, opportunities for professional development, and recognition of achievements. Teachers who reported higher levels of motivation also demonstrated better performance and job satisfaction. Challenges such as inadequate salaries, poor working conditions, limited career advancement opportunities, and lack of recognition were identified as barriers to motivation. Teachers and administrators emphasized the importance of addressing these issues to enhance overall educational quality.
The study concludes that improving teacher motivation is essential for enhancing performance in secondary schools. Recommendations include increasing salaries, improving working conditions, providing more professional development opportunities, and establishing systems for recognizing teacher achievements. By focusing on these areas, schools in Buea can support teachers more effectively and improve educational outcomes.
