Abstract
Discrimination at work poses significant challenges for employees with disabilities, affecting their job satisfaction, productivity, and overall well-being. This study explores the nature of discrimination faced by employees with disabilities in Buea Municipality, Cameroon, and examines the coping strategies they employ to manage these challenges. The objective is to understand how discrimination impacts their professional experiences and the effectiveness of their coping mechanisms.
The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Data is collected from employees with disabilities across various sectors in Buea Municipality. The study investigates the prevalence and types of discriminatory practices, such as exclusion, unequal opportunities, and prejudice, and analyzes how these practices affect employees’ work experiences and performance. Additionally, it explores the coping strategies that employees use to navigate and mitigate the effects of discrimination.
Findings indicate that discrimination in the workplace manifests in various forms, including biased attitudes, inadequate accommodations, and limited career advancement opportunities. Employees with disabilities report experiencing challenges such as social isolation, reduced job satisfaction, and barriers to professional growth. Coping strategies employed by these individuals include seeking support from peers and advocacy groups, employing self-advocacy techniques, and utilizing formal grievance procedures.
The study also highlights the effectiveness of different coping strategies. Support networks and advocacy groups provide emotional support and practical assistance, helping employees navigate discriminatory practices and assert their rights. Self-advocacy and formal grievance procedures offer structured ways to address and rectify discriminatory behavior. However, some employees face barriers in accessing these support systems due to lack of awareness or fear of retaliation.
Recommendations from the study emphasize the need for employers in Buea Municipality to implement inclusive policies and practices that promote equal opportunities and reduce discrimination. Training programs should be introduced to raise awareness about disability issues and foster a more inclusive workplace culture. Additionally, enhancing support systems and resources for employees with disabilities can help them effectively manage and overcome workplace discrimination.
In conclusion, discrimination at work significantly impacts employees with disabilities in Buea Municipality. By adopting inclusive practices, providing support, and addressing discriminatory behaviors, employers can improve the work experiences and outcomes for employees with disabilities, creating a more equitable and supportive work environment.
