Abstract
Early pregnancy is a critical factor contributing to the high dropout rates among girls in secondary schools, particularly in regions like Limbe Municipality, Cameroon. This study investigates the relationship between early pregnancy and school dropout rates among female students in selected secondary schools in Limbe. The research aims to identify the underlying causes, the extent of the problem, and the impact of early pregnancy on girls’ educational attainment and future prospects.
A mixed-methods approach is utilized in this study, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews and focus group discussions. The research involves collecting data from female students who have experienced early pregnancy, school administrators, teachers, and healthcare professionals. The surveys focus on gathering information about school attendance, academic performance, and dropout rates, while interviews provide in-depth insights into the personal experiences of young mothers and the challenges they face in continuing their education.
The findings reveal a strong correlation between early pregnancy and school dropout among girls in secondary schools in Limbe Municipality. Pregnant students often face significant barriers to continuing their education, including social stigma, lack of adequate support, and health-related complications. The study shows that many girls drop out of school during pregnancy or shortly after childbirth due to the overwhelming responsibilities of motherhood, coupled with the absence of flexible school policies that accommodate their unique needs.
Social stigma and discrimination from peers, teachers, and the community further exacerbate the challenges faced by pregnant students. These negative attitudes often result in feelings of isolation and shame, making it difficult for young mothers to reintegrate into the school environment. The lack of support from schools, in the form of counseling services, childcare options, or flexible scheduling, contributes to the high dropout rates observed among this group.
Health issues related to pregnancy, such as fatigue, complications during childbirth, and postpartum recovery, also play a significant role in school dropout. The physical demands of pregnancy and childcare, combined with the emotional stress of balancing academic responsibilities with motherhood, make it difficult for young mothers to remain engaged in their studies.
The study concludes that early pregnancy is a significant factor driving school dropout among girls in secondary schools in Limbe Municipality. Addressing this issue requires comprehensive interventions that focus on creating supportive school environments, implementing flexible academic programs for pregnant students, and providing access to healthcare and counseling services. By offering tailored support, schools can help mitigate the impact of early pregnancy on girls’ education and reduce the high dropout rates observed in the region.
In conclusion, early pregnancy is a major contributor to school dropout among girls in Limbe Municipality. To combat this issue, it is essential for schools, policymakers, and communities to work together to create a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for young mothers. With the right interventions, it is possible to improve retention rates and ensure that girls who experience early pregnancy have the opportunity to complete their education and secure a better future for themselves and their children.
