Abstract
Educational planning within the Degree-Masters-Doctorate (DMD) system is critical for ensuring that graduates are career-ready. This study explores the relationship between educational planning in the DMD system and the career readiness of graduates from the University of Buea, Cameroon. Career readiness is defined as the possession of the necessary skills, knowledge, and competencies that enable graduates to secure and excel in employment. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from graduate employment rates, employer feedback, and academic performance records with qualitative insights from interviews and focus group discussions with students, faculty, and industry representatives.
Findings reveal that effective educational planning in the DMD system significantly enhances graduates’ career readiness. Key components of successful educational planning include a well-structured curriculum, practical training opportunities, industry partnerships, and continuous assessment and feedback mechanisms. Graduates from programs with strong industry linkages, internships, and hands-on projects reported higher levels of preparedness for the job market. Furthermore, the integration of soft skills training, such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, into the curriculum positively impacted graduates’ employability.
The study also identifies several factors that influence the effectiveness of educational planning. These include faculty expertise, availability of resources, alignment of academic programs with industry needs, and support services such as career counseling and job placement assistance. Programs that regularly updated their curricula to reflect current industry trends and demands produced graduates who were more competitive in the job market.
Challenges to effective educational planning in the DMD system include limited funding, outdated curricula, insufficient collaboration between the university and industry, and a lack of focus on soft skills development. Addressing these challenges involves increased investment in education, fostering stronger partnerships with industry, and regularly reviewing and updating academic programs to ensure they meet the evolving needs of the job market.
Recommendations for policymakers and educational authorities include enhancing funding for higher education, promoting continuous professional development for faculty, and encouraging active industry involvement in curriculum development and implementation. Additionally, establishing robust career services and support systems within the university can further aid in preparing graduates for successful careers.
In conclusion, effective educational planning in the DMD system is crucial for enhancing the career readiness of graduates from the University of Buea. By addressing the identified challenges and implementing the study’s recommendations, the university can better prepare its students for the workforce, ultimately contributing to their professional success and economic development.
