INTRODUCTION

The academic success of students is influenced by a variety of factors, with learning style being a significant one. Learning styles refer to the individual differences in how people perceive, process, and retain information. These differences can manifest in the way students approach learning tasks, interact with materials, and respond to teaching methods. Understanding how learning styles impact academic performance has been a focus of educational research for decades.

Understanding learning styles is seen as a pathway to improving educational outcomes. When teaching methods are aligned with students’ preferred learning styles, it is hypothesized that students are more engaged and can absorb information more effectively. Conversely, mismatches between teaching strategies and learning preferences may lead to disengagement, frustration, and poor academic performance. Research into the impact of learning styles on academic performance explores the relationship between students’ learning preferences and their grades, comprehension, and overall achievement. Several studies have examined how instructors can adapt their teaching to meet students’ individual learning needs.

The primary challenge in aligning learning styles with students’ academic performance in mathematics lies in the oversimplification and misapplication of the learning styles theory. While the concept suggests that tailoring instruction to individual learning preferences such as visual, auditory, or kinesthetic can enhance learning outcomes, empirical evidence supporting this approach is limited and inconsistent.

One significant issue is the lack of robust scientific validation for learning styles. Research indicates that the most effective teaching methods are often related to the content being taught rather than individual learning preferences. For instance, a study highlighted in Wired discusses how the belief in learning styles may be more myth than fact, with little empirical support for the idea that matching instruction to learning styles improves learning outcomes.

One of the main problems with relying on learning styles in mathematics education is the lack of strong scientific evidence supporting the theory. The idea that students learn better when instruction matches their preferred style such as visual, auditory, or kinesthetic has become popular in educational settings. However, numerous studies have shown that there is little to no consistent improvement in learning outcomes when instruction is tailored this way. Mathematics is a subject that often demands a blend of different approaches rather than a single learning style. For example, solving problems in algebra or geometry might involve visualizing patterns, manipulating symbols, using logical reasoning, and explaining thought processes out loud. A student who believes they are a “visual learner” might avoid verbal explanations or symbolic reasoning, which are essential components of mathematical thinking. This reliance on a preferred style can actually hinder their overall learning and limit their ability to adapt to new or complex problems.

Another critical issue is that categorizing students by learning styles can encourage a fixed mindset. When students are labeled as a specific type of learner, they may internalize the belief that they can only learn effectively in that way. This belief can discourage them from stepping outside their comfort zone and experimenting with different strategies, even when those strategies might be more effective. In mathematics, where flexibility and persistence are key to understanding, this can be particularly harmful.

Focusing too much on learning styles also shifts attention away from more significant factors that influence success in mathematics. Students’ prior knowledge, motivation, study habits, quality of instruction, and timely feedback all play far more important roles in their performance. Effective math learning often comes from active engagement, regular practice, and opportunities for deep thinking not simply from matching content to a student’s preferred mode of learning.

Lastly, when teachers attempt to design lessons around learning styles, they may unintentionally weaken the depth and rigor of math instruction. Lessons might prioritize surface-level engagement over meaningful problem-solving or critical thinking. Rather than focusing on matching styles, educators should use a variety of teaching strategies that encourage all students to think in different ways. Evidence-based practices such as spaced repetition, active problem solving, collaborative learning, and promoting a growth mindset have consistently shown to improve mathematical understanding and performance.

In conclusion, while learning preferences can play a role in student engagement, the concept of fixed learning styles is not a reliable or effective foundation for teaching mathematics. To support student success, educators should emphasize flexible, research-backed teaching methods that develop a wide range of cognitive and problem-solving skills.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLE

As an educator (or researcher), I have consistently observed that despite students putting effort into studying mathematics, many still struggle to grasp fundamental concepts and perform well in assessments. This persistent underachievement among students has been a major source of concern, especially given the importance of mathematics in both academic advancement and everyday problem-solving. In trying to understand the root causes of this issue, I noticed a recurring pattern: different students tend to understand and retain information better when it is delivered in ways that match their personal preferences. This observation sparked my interest in learning styles and their possible influence on academic outcomes.

Learning styles describe the preferred ways in which individuals receive and process information. According to the VARK framework, students may be visual, auditory, reading/writing, or kinesthetic learners. While these differences are well-documented, many mathematics classrooms still rely on traditional, lecture-based teaching methods that do not take into account the diversity in students’ learning preferences. This often results in some students excelling, while others, whose learning styles are not aligned with the teaching method, fall behind.

The urge to conduct this study came from a desire to explore whether a better understanding of students’ learning styles could help bridge this gap in mathematics performance. If certain learning styles are found to significantly influence students’ ability to understand and perform in mathematics, it would highlight the need for more differentiated and flexible teaching strategies. Additionally, this study could provide students with insights into their own learning processes, empowering them to adopt study habits that align with their strengths.

Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of learning styles on students’ academic performance in mathematics. It seeks to determine whether there is a significant relationship between preferred learning styles and performance levels, and how this knowledge can be used to improve teaching practices and learning outcomes in mathematics education.

Therefore, this study seeks to explore the impact of learning styles on student academic performance, with the goal of understanding whether aligning teaching strategies with students’ preferred learning styles improves their learning outcomes, or if other variables play a more central role in academic achievement.

PURPOSE OR OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The primary objective of this study is to investigate the impact of learning styles on student academic performance. Specifically, the study aims to:

 Examine the relationship between students’ learning styles and their academic performance: To determine whether there is a significant correlation between the alignment of students’ preferred learning styles and their academic achievement across different subjects or disciplines.

Identify the most common learning styles among students: To analyze the distribution of various learning styles (e.g., visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc.) within a student population and understand how prevalent each style is.

Assess the effectiveness of teaching strategies that align with students’ learning styles: To explore whether teaching methods tailored to students’ learning preferences lead to better academic outcomes compared to traditional, non-adapted teaching approaches.

Investigate other factors influencing academic performance: To examine whether learning styles alone significantly contribute to academic performance or if other factors, such as motivation, cognitive abilities, and socio-economic background, have a greater influence.

Provide recommendations for educators: Based on the findings, the study seeks to offer practical recommendations for educators on how to incorporate learning styles into their teaching strategies to optimize student engagement, comprehension, and overall academic performance.

Ultimately, the study aims to contribute to the ongoing debate regarding the role of learning styles in education and provide insights that can inform instructional practices in diverse educational settings.
