Abstract

The phenomenon of overpopulation in secondary schools has become a critical challenge in many developing regions, including Buea, Cameroon. This study investigates the effect of overpopulation on students’ academic performance in secondary schools within Buea Municipality. Overpopulation in classrooms is often linked to several adverse conditions, such as overcrowded learning environments, inadequate teacher-student interaction, insufficient learning resources, and heightened classroom management issues, all of which can impede student learning outcomes.

This research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of academic performance data with qualitative insights gathered from interviews with teachers, students, and school administrators. The study focuses on key performance indicators, such as exam scores, grade progression rates, and student engagement levels, and examines how these are influenced by class sizes exceeding the recommended limits.

Findings indicate a significant negative correlation between overpopulation and academic performance. Overcrowded classrooms limit the ability of teachers to provide individualized attention, reduce opportunities for interactive learning, and often lead to increased classroom disruptions. These conditions create a less conducive learning environment, which directly impacts students’ ability to perform well academically. Furthermore, overpopulated classrooms are associated with higher levels of student absenteeism and dropout rates, as students struggle to cope with the lack of personal support and the diminished quality of education.

The study also reveals that teachers in overpopulated schools face increased workloads, leading to burnout and reduced teaching effectiveness. Limited access to educational materials and facilities, such as textbooks, desks, and laboratories, further exacerbates the problem, leaving students underprepared for exams and less likely to achieve their academic potential.

To address these issues, the research proposes several recommendations. First, policymakers should consider implementing measures to control class sizes, such as building more schools, hiring additional teachers, and redistributing students across less crowded institutions. Investment in educational infrastructure is also critical, particularly in providing adequate classroom space and learning resources. Additionally, teacher training programs should focus on equipping educators with strategies to manage large classes effectively, ensuring that all students receive the support they need to succeed academically.

The study contributes to the growing body of literature on educational challenges in developing countries, offering valuable insights into how overpopulation affects student achievement and highlighting the need for targeted interventions to improve educational outcomes. By addressing the root causes of overpopulation in secondary schools, educational stakeholders in Buea and across Cameroon can work towards creating a more equitable and effective learning environment for all students.
