Abstract
This study investigates the effect of strategic orientation on the organizational performance of three-star rated hotels in Fako Division, Cameroon. Strategic orientation refers to how organizations align their resources and operations to achieve long-term objectives, emphasizing areas like market focus, resource management, innovation, and customer satisfaction. The aim of this research is to determine how strategic orientation impacts the overall performance of hotels, particularly in the context of a competitive and dynamic hospitality industry.
A quantitative approach was employed in gathering data. The data collection process involved administering structured questionnaires to hotel managers, supervisors, and employees from selected three-star hotels in Fako Division. The sample size consisted of 50 respondents from five different hotels. The survey focused on evaluating strategic decisions regarding marketing, resource allocation, customer service, innovation, and their corresponding impact on organizational outcomes such as revenue growth, customer satisfaction, and market share. The respondents provided insights into how each strategic factor influences the hotels’ ability to compete effectively in the tourism and hospitality industry.
The results of the study reveal a strong correlation between strategic orientation and hotel performance. Hotels that prioritize customer-centric strategies, allocate resources effectively, and innovate continuously tend to outperform those that do not. Specifically, a market-driven approach, which focuses on understanding and meeting customer needs, was found to be a key determinant of success. Hotels with a clear strategic vision and a focus on operational efficiency recorded higher levels of customer satisfaction, repeat business, and profitability. Conversely, hotels that lacked a defined strategic orientation experienced stagnation or decline in key performance indicators.
Moreover, the study highlighted that strategic innovation and responsiveness to market changes are critical in maintaining competitiveness. Hotels that invested in staff training, embraced new technologies, and adapted their services to meet evolving customer expectations performed significantly better. On the other hand, hotels with rigid structures and outdated practices struggled to retain customers and improve financial outcomes.
Based on the findings, the study recommends that three-star hotels in Fako Division should adopt a more proactive and flexible approach to strategic management. Emphasizing market research, customer feedback, and innovation in service delivery can enhance their competitive advantage. Additionally, hotels should focus on employee development and resource optimization to ensure sustainable growth. By aligning their strategies with current market trends and customer needs, these hotels can improve their organizational performance, increase customer loyalty, and boost profitability.
