Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of non-verbal communication across cultures in Cameroon. While verbal communication is often the focus, nonverbal communication has played a crucial role in human interaction for thousands of years. The research identifies the problem of cultural differences in non-verbal communication, as culture influences how individuals approach communication and participate in groups. The study specifically investigates the role of nonverbal behaviors in cross-cultural communication and the effectiveness and importance of nonverbal communication in English and French cultures in Cameroon. The quantitative research methodology is chosen to analyze and determine the effectiveness of nonverbal communication.

Chapter One:

Introduction

1.1 Background to the Study

Communication is an integral part of human life, impacting us economically, socially, politically, and culturally. Nonverbal communication encompasses all forms of communication that do not rely on spoken or written languages. It is influenced by culture, with different cultures assigning varied meanings to nonverbal cues. Cultural differences can lead to misinterpretation of nonverbal messages, as what holds significance in one culture may have a different meaning in another. Cameroon, known as “Africa’s in miniature,” is a culturally diverse country with numerous ethnic groups and two official languages, English and French.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Communication challenges often stem from cultural differences, and nonverbal communication is no exception. The research aims to address the challenges of nonverbal communication across cultures, explore the role of nonverbal behaviors in cross-cultural communication, and examine the effectiveness of nonverbal communication in a cross-cultural setting.

1.3 Research Questions

  1. What are the common challenges of nonverbal communication across cultures?
  2. What role do nonverbal behaviors play in cross-cultural communication?

1.4 Research Hypotheses

The research work is based on the following hypotheses:

Ho1: There are significant common challenges to nonverbal communication across cultures. Ho2: Nonverbal behaviors play a significant role in cross-cultural communication.

1.5 Objectives of the Study

1.5.1 General Objective

The general objective of this study is to understand the use and effectiveness of nonverbal communication across cultures in Cameroon, with a focus on how culture influences nonverbal communication.

1.5.2 Specific Objectives

To achieve the general objective, the study aims to:

  1. Determine if nonverbal communication can be effectively used across English and French cultures in Cameroon and identify the challenges faced when communicating nonverbally with individuals from different cultures.
  2. Investigate the role of nonverbal behaviors in cross-cultural communication and assess the effectiveness of nonverbal communication in cross-cultural settings.
