INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Agribusiness enterprises play a fundamental role in the economies of developing regions, including Bamenda, a city located in the Northwest Region of Cameroon. The agribusiness sector is not only crucial for providing sustenance to the local population but also for generating employment and contributing to the overall economic development of the area. Effective inventory management is essential for these businesses, impacting various aspects of their operations, including cost control, product availability, and customer satisfaction. Inventory management refers to the process of ordering, storing, tracking, and controlling inventory to ensure that a business has the right amount of stock at the right time. In the context of agribusiness, effective inventory management can enhance operational efficiency, improve cash flow, and minimize wastage due to spoilage or obsolescence (Chavan & Mahajan, 2020). According to Andrew and Kivela (2021), efficient inventory systems allow agricultural enterprises to respond more quickly to market demands, thus enhancing their competitiveness and profitability.

In Bamenda, where climate conditions, supply chain inefficiencies, and infrastructural challenges can affect agricultural productivity, the need for effective inventory management becomes even more pronounced. Agricultural products are often perishable, necessitating a robust inventory management strategy to minimize losses and ensure quality. A study conducted by Tchouassi et al. (2022) highlights the challenges faced by agricultural businesses in Bamenda, including inadequate storage facilities and lack of advanced inventory practices, which hinder growth opportunities. Moreover, recent trends in technology adoption in agriculture—such as precision agriculture, data analytics, and mobile applications—are transforming inventory management practices. These innovations assist businesses in accurately forecasting demand and optimizing stock levels, ultimately enhancing their operational performance (Ngala et al., 2023). However, the degree of technology adoption varies among agricultural enterprises in Bamenda, influencing their overall efficiency and productivity.

The present study aims to investigate the effects of inventory management on agribusiness enterprises among agripreneurs in Bamenda Town, specifically focusing on how it contributes to agribusiness enhancement. Understanding these dynamics is vital for stakeholders, including policymakers, business owners, and agricultural practitioners, as it will inform strategies to bolster the local agribusiness sector and improve food security in the region.

In Cameroon, an economy that is significantly reliant on agriculture (over 60% of the population engages in agribusiness activities), efficient inventory management can enhance productivity, reduce waste, and improve the overall competitiveness of agribusiness. Despite the importance of effective inventory management, many agribusiness enterprises in Cameroon face significant challenges, including unpredictable supply chain conditions, inadequate storage facilities, and fluctuating market demands, which hinder their operational effectiveness. Proper inventory management is crucial in minimizing costs and maximizing operational efficiency within agribusiness enterprises. It entails maintaining optimal stock levels, reducing spoilage, and ensuring that products are available for sale when needed (Kumar et al., 2021). According to a study by Nguema et al. (2022), effective inventory management practices, such as Just-in-Time (JIT) and Economic Order Quantity (EOQ), can mitigate issues related to overstocking and stockouts, which are prevalent in the agribusiness sector.

Cameroon is characterized by a diverse array of agricultural products, including cash crops such as cocoa and coffee, as well as staple crops like maize and cassava. However, storage and management issues often lead to post-harvest losses, which have been estimated at around 30-40% for many agricultural products (World Bank, 2023). The World Bank has emphasized that improving inventory management systems could significantly reduce these losses, thereby contributing to food security and increasing the incomes of farmers.  Additionally, factors such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of technological integration, and limited access to information significantly hinder effective inventory management. The African Development Bank (2022) points to the need for investment in rural infrastructure and technology adoption as vital for enhancing inventory management practices in the agribusiness sector. The effects of improved inventory management on agribusiness enhancement are multi-faceted. Enhanced inventory control can lead to better cash flow management, lower operational costs, and improved customer satisfaction due to more consistent supply (Amoako et al., 2021). Recent studies demonstrate that organizations implementing robust inventory management strategies report improved sales performance and enhanced market positioning (Ngoh & Nsagha, 2023). Such improvements are especially critical in a competitive agribusiness landscape like that of Cameroon.

In the context of agribusiness in Bamenda, the effects of inventory management on agripreneurs enhancement are particularly relevant due to the challenges faced by farmers and small-scale agribusiness owners in the region. Limited access to financing, inadequate storage facilities and unpredictable market conditions are some of the factors that can affect inventory management practices among agripreneurs in Bamenda. This study aims to fill this gap in the literature by examining the effects of inventory management on agribusiness enhancement among agripreneurs in Bamenda Town. By conducting surveys with agripreneurs in the region, the study seeks to identify the key inventory management practices that contribute to the success of agribusinesses in Bamenda Town. The findings of this study are expected to provide valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and agribusiness owners looking to improve their inventory management practices and enhance the overall performance of the agricultural sector in Bamenda Town.

Inventory management is of high importance in financial management decisions. This is because excess or shortage of inventory may bring danger to the company. Inventory management involves creating a purchasing plan which will help to ensure that all items or materials are available when needed as well as tracking of existing inventories and their use. Organizational growth is the key to the sustainability of any organization. There are many strategies used for organizational growth such as introducing new products, entering new markets to increase revenue, acquiring and merging with other enterprises, and developing internal skills. However, certain factors are critical for organizational growth. Such factors include effective leadership, committed employees, expert power and effectiveness, sense of purpose and direction, and profitability. However, profitability is considered to be the main measure for organizational growth as it embodies the effectiveness and efficiency of all other factors. For a firm to be profitable, it must adopt an effective inventory management system so as not to tie down capital in stock. Also, the more capital available in the form of stock, the more holding cost and risk of material damage.

Small and medium-sized enterprises constitute the bulk of Cameroon enterprises. Law No 2010/010 of 13th April 2018 on the promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises in Cameroon and other legal institutional instruments paved the way for the sector with many such enterprises being created. According to the ministry of small and medium-sized enterprises, social economy and handicraft (MINPMEESA), small and medium-sized enterprises constitute 95% of Cameroon’s enterprises with sectors in agriculture and animal husbandry, general commerce, construction and public works and most recently information and communication technology (ICT). 61366 small and medium-sized enterprises in Cameroon were created between 2010 and 2016 of which the majority (59200) were local and the rest (2166) were foreign. Small and medium-sized enterprises are considered by MINPMEESA as the main engine of Cameroon’s economic growth. One problem faced by most of these enterprises in Cameroon is that they have a short life span. A good chunk of these enterprises dies naturally while still at an incubator stage. This is as a result of the poor or absence of market research as well as the good choice of area of specialty (niche).

1.2 Statement of the Problem 

Agriculture plays a significant role in the economy of many developing countries, including Cameroon. Agribusiness, which involves the production, processing, and marketing of agricultural products, has the potential to enhance the livelihoods of agripreneurs in Bamenda, Cameroon. However, poor inventory management practices can hinder the growth and sustainability of agribusiness ventures. There is a lack of research on the specific effects of inventory management on agribusiness enhancement among agripreneurs in Bamenda Town. Inventory management is crucial in ensuring that agripreneurs have the right amount of inputs, such as seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides, to meet the demand for their products. Efficient inventory management can lead to cost savings, improved productivity, and increased profitability for agribusinesses.

Additionally, poor inventory management can lead to stockouts, overstocking, wastage, and increased production costs for agripreneurs. These challenges can ultimately affect the competitiveness and sustainability of agribusiness ventures in Bamenda Town. By investigating the effects of inventory management on agribusiness enhancement among agripreneurs in Bamenda, this research aims to provide valuable insights into the importance of efficient inventory management practices in the agricultural sector. This study will also contribute to the existing literature on inventory management and its impact on agribusiness development in developing countries.

As agribusiness continues to evolve and grow in importance, the role of effective inventory management in enhancing the operations and profitability of agripreneurs is becoming increasingly crucial. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the specific effects of inventory management on agribusiness enhancement among agripreneurs. The existing literature on inventory management predominantly focuses on manufacturing and retail industries, with limited studies examining its impact on agricultural businesses. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the unique challenges and opportunities that inventory management presents in the context of agribusiness. By conducting a thorough investigation into the effects of inventory management on agribusiness enhancement among agripreneurs, this study aims to provide valuable insights and practical recommendations for improving inventory practices in the agribusiness sector. Additionally, it will contribute to bridging the gap in the current literature and advancing our understanding of the role of inventory management in agribusiness success.

In Bamenda, a major agricultural hub in the North-West Region of Cameroon, inventory management plays a crucial role in determining the efficiency and profitability of agricultural business enterprises. Despite the region’s potential for agricultural production, many local businesses struggle with ineffective inventory management practices, leading to a range of challenges including stockouts, overstocking, and increased operational costs (Adebayo & Adeoye, 2021). These inefficiencies ultimately hinder the capacity of agricultural enterprises to respond effectively to market demands and impact overall agribusiness enhancement in the area. Recent studies highlight the necessity of adopting contemporary inventory management strategies to optimize resource utilization and enhance operational performance in the agricultural sector (Nkongho, 2022; Nchare & Chia, 2023). However, investigations reveal that many farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs in Bamenda are not using established inventory management methodologies, leading to inefficiencies that can stifle growth and sustainability in agribusiness (Nyamakan & Tanjong, 2021).

The lack of awareness and training on effective inventory practices, coupled with inadequate technological support, exacerbates the challenges faced by these enterprises (Njeuma et al., 2023). This scenario raises critical questions about the relationship between inventory management practices and agribusiness outcomes in the region. As such, it is imperative to conduct comprehensive research to evaluate how inventory management directly affects agricultural business performance and what strategies can be implemented to enhance agribusiness resilience in Bamenda Town.

The problem for inventory management by agribusiness enterprises in Bamenda Town can be summarized as follows: Inefficient inventory tracking and control: many agricultural businesses in Bamenda struggle with keeping accurate records of their inventory levels. This leads to overstocking or stockouts, which result to financial losses and delays in fulfilling orders. Lack of standardized inventory management practices: Due to the absence of standardized inventory management practices, businesses face challenges in optimizing their inventory levels, leading to increased carrying costs and decreased operational efficiency. Limited technology adoption: many agribusinesses  enterprises in Bamenda still rely on manual processes for inventory management, which are time-consuming and prone to errors. This hinders the businesses ability to effectively track and manage their inventory levels. Poor demand forecasting: without accurate demand forecasting, agricultural businesses in Bamenda struggle to anticipate market trends and adjust their inventory levels accordingly. This often results in excess inventory levels and shortages leading to loss of sales opportunities. Inadequate supply chain visibility: limited visibility into the supply chain makes it difficult for agribusinesses in Bamenda to monitor their inventory levels across different locations. This decisions- making and coordination efforts, increasing the risk of stockouts and excess inventory.
