ABSTRACT

This study titled, “EFFECTS OF LEAN SIX SIGMA ON PROGRESS EFFICIENCY: THE CASE OF GLOTELHO, DOUALA – CAMEROON,” was caried out in GLOTELHO, Douala – Cameroon. The study’s main objective was to find out the influence of inventory management on supply chain responsiveness, with specific objectives to determine the effects of Lean Six Sigma on customer satisfaction in GLOTELHO, to investigate the challenges of lean six sigma on progress efficiency in GLOTELHO and to propose the measures in addressing the challenges of lean six sigma on progress efficiency in GLOTELHO. The study adopted a descriptive research method and found that, while Lean Six Sigma is viewed as significantly contributing to customer satisfaction, with a mean score of 3.42 out of 5, its effectiveness in improving overall process efficiency and reducing operational costs is less positively perceived, with mean scores of 1.88 each. The study also found that, the organization demonstrates a moderate commitment, as reflected in the mean score of 3.18 out of 5 for striving for perfection through continuous improvement. Moreso, the regression analysis highlights that a model incorporating factors like Lean Six Sigma’s impact on customer satisfaction, continuous improvement culture, and performance monitoring significantly explains the variance in GLOTELHO’s continuous improvement efforts. While GLOTELHO demonstrates a solid commitment to continuous improvement and sees Lean Six Sigma’s potential in enhancing customer satisfaction, the study revealed that, challenges exist in effectively leveraging Lean Six Sigma for broader efficiency gains.  The study concludes that, GLOTELHO stands at a crucial juncture where it can capitalize on its existing commitment to continuous improvement and enhance its Lean Six Sigma practices to achieve broader operational efficiencies. This study made some recommendations and suggested areas for further studies.

CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the study

The idea of progress, which is usually considered “a child of the age of enlightenment and a ‘trademark’ of modernity,” has seen a remarkable revival in recent years in conceptual as well as measurement terms. The custom, transport and manufacturing sectors play a crucial role in production of goods and services, growth of the companies and the economy, and job Naudé and Szirmai, (2012). Progress is the most important engine of long-term growth and development, both in developed and developing countries McKinsey, (2012).

In the world, progress, or more specifically, societal progress appears to be a normative concept, which in its essence may be understood as the change or advancement of major conditions of societies and people’s lives in a direction considered desirable based on prevailing social values and shared political goals of societal development Heinz-Herbert, (2015). Also, Jones and Smith (2021) emphasized that integrating advanced technologies and innovative management practices is crucial for maintaining competitiveness and efficiency in these sectors. Societal progress must be understood within the context of sustainable development, balancing economic growth with social equity and environmental protection Martin and Davis, (2022). Modern progress involves not only technological advancements but also improvements in social well-being and environmental sustainability. Thompson and Roberts (2023) assert that companies must adopt holistic strategies that encompass cost reduction, quality improvement, ethical considerations, and social responsibility.

In the developed countries, comparative study by Johnson and Yamamoto (2022) explored the differences in Lean Six Sigma implementation between the United States and Japan. The study highlighted that while both countries emphasize the importance of Lean Six Sigma, there are variations in their approaches. The United States tends to prioritize rapid improvement and bottom-line results, while Japan places a greater emphasis on long-term sustainability and employee involvement. These differences in implementation strategies can influence the outcomes and effectiveness of Lean Six Sigma in terms of progress efficiency.

The effects of Lean Six Sigma on progress efficiency have garnered attention not only in developed countries but also in developing nations. In India, for example, Lean Six Sigma has gained traction across various industries, including manufacturing, IT services, and healthcare. Patel and Desai (2019), stipulates that, the implementation of Lean Six Sigma in a pharmaceutical manufacturing company in India. The findings revealed that Lean Six Sigma initiatives resulted in significant process improvements, such as a reduction in defects, improved cycle times, and enhanced productivity. These improvements ultimately led to increased progress efficiency and facilitated the company’s ability to deliver high-quality products to market more efficiently. Brazil has witnessed the adoption of Lean Six Sigma practices in sectors such as automotive, energy, and telecommunications. A study by Silva (2020) examined the effects of Lean Six Sigma implementation in a Brazilian manufacturing company. The results indicated that Lean Six Sigma initiatives led to a reduction in waste, improved process flow, and enhanced product quality.

In Africa, with its diverse challenges, including infrastructural constraints, fluctuating economic conditions, and varying degrees of technological adoption across different regions by which, it becomes imperative to investigate how Lean Six Sigma can serve as catalysts for progress efficiency in African organizations. Their study aims to investigate the impact of Lean Six Sigma implementation on progress efficiency in two African countries, namely South Africa and Kenya. Lean Six Sigma methodologies, which integrate Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles, have the potential to enhance operational efficiency and overall progress. By examining the experiences of these two countries, valuable insights can be gained regarding the effectiveness of Lean Six Sigma in improving progress efficiency in an African context Aigbavboa (2016).

In South Africa, Lean Six Sigma has been increasingly adopted in various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare. A study conducted by Ndlovu and Mbohwa (2018) examined the implementation of Lean Six Sigma in a manufacturing company in South Africa. The findings indicated that Lean Six Sigma initiatives resulted in significant reductions in defects, improved process flow, and enhanced productivity. These improvements led to increased progress efficiency, enabling the company to deliver products more efficiently and effectively to customers.

In Cameroon, given the unique socio-economic and business environment that characterizes the country World Bank, (2022), understanding how Lean Six Sigma methodologies can be effectively applied in this context is crucial for organizations seeking to enhance progress efficiency. Cameroon’s economic landscape is diverse, encompassing industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, services, and extractive industries. Each sector faces its own set of challenges, and the effectiveness of Lean Six Sigma methodologies may vary across these diverse domains Pankaj, (2018). LSS in the manufacturing sector has been a credible story as many organizations across the globe have realized immense benefits from embedding LSS methodologies. LSS helps firms in the achievement of sustained competitive advantage, particularly through the combined impact of improved customer service and lower costs to serve.

In Douala, particularly at GLOTELHO, a leading telecommunication and logistics company operating in a highly competitive industrial area, there is a strong demand for efficient and streamlined operations to meet customer expectations and maintain a competitive advantage. According to Williams (2023), the company recognizes the significance of progress efficiency in achieving operational excellence and explores the effects of Lean Six Sigma on progress efficiency to drive continuous improvement and enhance its performance in the telecommunication and logistics sector. GLOTELHO faces unique challenges in managing complex operations, ensuring timely delivery of services, and optimizing resource utilization. Lean Six Sigma, a methodology combining Lean principles and Six Sigma tools, offers a structured approach to identify and eliminate waste, reduce process variation, and improve overall efficiency Johnson, (2022). By applying Lean Six Sigma principles within its operations, GLOTELHO seeks to enhance progress efficiency, reduce process cycle times, and improve service quality.

1.2 Statement of the Research Problem

GLOTELHO, a telecommunications company that aims at enhancing progress efficiency, is crucial to understand the effects of Lean Six Sigma implementation on customer satisfaction. But implementing Lean Six Sigma within GLOTELHO to improve progress efficiency raises several specific problems regarding its impact on customer satisfaction. One primary issue is the potential misalignment between Lean Six Sigma objectives and customer satisfaction metrics. GLOTELHO focuses on reducing operational defects and optimizing processes to enhance efficiency, but these improvements do not directly translate into increased customer satisfaction as they do not address key customer concerns or preferences, such as the quality of goods and services. This misalignment results in a discrepancy between internal performance measures and customer perceptions, leading to dissatisfaction despite operational improvements. GLOTELHO reduces service delivery times through Lean Six Sigma initiatives, but if customers prioritize service quality over speed, their satisfaction levels will not increase accordingly. This problem highlights the need for GLOTELHO to carefully assess the relationship between Lean Six Sigma improvements and customer satisfaction metrics to ensure that operational enhancements align with customer expectations and preferences.

More so, the complexity of Lean Six Sigma methodologies may lead to resistance and reluctance among employees to embrace change, thereby hindering the smooth implementation of process improvement initiatives. This resistance can result in delays in project completion and suboptimal utilization of resources, ultimately impacting progress efficiency. Without proper training, employees may struggle to understand and apply Lean Six Sigma tools and concepts, leading to inefficiencies in project implementation and subpar results. For example, most employees a resist adopting new tools and techniques introduced through Lean Six Sigma, leading to delays in process optimization efforts and undermining the overall effectiveness of progress efficiency initiatives. Additionally, limited buy-in from senior management and stakeholders may further exacerbate these challenges, as the absence of strong leadership support can undermine the prioritization and allocation of resources to Lean Six Sigma initiatives.

Furthermore, to effectively address the challenges associated with implementing Lean Six Sigma and enhance progress efficiency, GLOTELHO must identify specific obstacles that hinder its successful execution and develop a strategic plan to mitigate these challenges. One prominent issue is the inadequacy of training and skill development among employees to proficiently implement Lean Six Sigma methodologies. This deficiency not only impedes the organization’s ability to execute improvement projects effectively but can also undermines its capacity to realize the full potential of Lean Six Sigma in driving operational excellence. GLOTELHO encounters challenges in providing comprehensive training programs and resources to equip employees with the necessary knowledge and skills to implement Lean Six Sigma principles effectively. This problem manifests in various ways, such as employees struggling to understand and apply Lean Six Sigma tools and techniques, resulting in suboptimal process improvements and limited progress efficiency gains. More to that, employees who lack proficiency in statistical analysis and problem-solving methodologies required for Lean Six Sigma projects, brings about delays, errors, and inefficiencies in project execution. GLOTELHO clearly lacks effectives mitigations strategies to uncover the challenges accompanying the implementations of Lean Six Sigma.
