Abstract

Malnutrition remains a significant public health issue that adversely affects children’s growth, development, and overall health. This study examines the effects of malnutrition among children in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. Understanding the impact of malnutrition is crucial for developing effective interventions to improve child health and well-being in the community.

A cross-sectional study was conducted involving children from various neighborhoods in Buea Municipality. Data were collected through a combination of clinical assessments, dietary surveys, and caregiver interviews. The study assessed indicators of malnutrition, such as stunting, wasting, and underweight, and explored the associated effects on children’s physical health, cognitive development, and school performance. Additionally, the study investigated factors contributing to malnutrition, including socio-economic conditions, food insecurity, and access to healthcare services.

The findings reveal a notable prevalence of malnutrition among children in Buea, with significant adverse effects on their growth and development. Malnourished children exhibited higher rates of stunting and wasting, which are associated with delayed physical growth and increased susceptibility to infections. Cognitive and developmental delays were also observed, impacting children’s learning abilities and school performance. The study identified socio-economic factors, such as poverty and food insecurity, as key contributors to malnutrition. Limited access to nutritious food and inadequate healthcare services further exacerbated the issue.

The study underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions to address malnutrition in Buea Municipality. It recommends the implementation of community-based nutrition programs that focus on improving dietary practices, increasing food security, and enhancing access to healthcare services. Additionally, the study advocates for educational initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of balanced nutrition and the prevention of malnutrition-related complications. By addressing these factors, it is possible to improve the health outcomes and overall quality of life for children in Buea.
