ABSTRACT
Aseptic technique is a crucial practice used by healthcare professionals to prevent the spread of infection. This study aimed to assess the attitude and practice of nurses regarding aseptic techniques at the BUEA REGIONAL HOSPITAL. The research employed a descriptive cross-sectional design, involving 95 nurses working in surgical units. Data collection utilized a validated closed-ended questionnaire, and analysis was conducted using SPSS software. Descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages, were employed to address the research questions. The questionnaire covered socio-demographic information and assessed nurses’ knowledge, awareness, importance, and challenges related to aseptic techniques.
The findings revealed that 49.5% of the participants were aged between 25 and 30 years. A majority of 52.3% were familiar with the definition of aseptic techniques, while 68.4% acknowledged their importance. All respondents faced challenges in practicing aseptic techniques. Overall, the nurses’ practice of aseptic techniques was rated at 75%, indicating commendable adherence to the principles.
CHAPTER ONE
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Aseptic techniques have a long history, with ancient civilizations employing methods of water sanitation and wound antisepsis. The modern concept of asepsis emerged in the 19th century, with pioneers like Ignaz Semmelweis and Joseph Lister demonstrating the effectiveness of handwashing and antiseptic measures in reducing infections. These advancements led to significant improvements in surgical outcomes and patient safety.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The operating room environment, including the nursing personnel, can contribute to the transmission of nosocomial infections if aseptic techniques are not properly practiced. Maintaining a safe and therapeutic operating room environment is crucial to prevent the development of healthcare-associated infections, as surgical procedures compromise the integrity of the patient’s skin. Inadequate adherence to aseptic techniques can lead to contamination, colonization, and subsequent infection.
1.3 Rationale
Given the importance of aseptic techniques in preventing healthcare-associated infections, it is essential to assess the attitude and practice of nurses in this regard. Identifying misconceptions, challenges, and factors that influence their adherence to aseptic techniques can inform interventions and educational programs to improve practices and patient safety.
1.4 Research Questions
1.4.1 Main research question
What is the attitude of nurses towards aseptic technique practice?
1.4.2 Specific research questions
What is the level of nurses’ knowledge regarding aseptic techniques? What is the nurses’ understanding of the importance of aseptic techniques? What are the challenges faced by nurses in practicing aseptic techniques?
1.5 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this research is to investigate the attitude of nurses towards aseptic technique practices.
1.5.1 Specific objectives
Assess nurses’ knowledge of aseptic techniques. Evaluate nurses’ understanding of the importance of aseptic techniques. Identify the challenges faced by nurses in practicing aseptic techniques.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study holds significance in improving nurses’ attitudes towards aseptic techniques and enhancing their practice. The findings will guide nursing administrators in designing educational programs, seminars, and interventions to address areas of improvement. Additionally, the study’s outcomes will contribute to nursing education, informing the development of curricula and training courses related to aseptic techniques. The government can also utilize the study’s results to recognize the importance of aseptic technique practice and provide necessary support and resources to healthcare professionals. Ultimately, the research aims to reduce cross-infection rates and associated mortality, benefiting the nation’s healthcare system as a whole. Furthermore, the study can serve as a foundation for future research involving doctors, nursing
