Abstract

This study evaluates the clinical learning experiences of undergraduate nursing students at Biaka University Institute, Buea. Clinical training is a vital component of nursing education, offering students hands-on experience and bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The effectiveness of clinical learning directly influences the competence and preparedness of nursing students in real-world healthcare settings. This research aims to assess the quality of the clinical environment, the challenges faced by students, and the overall satisfaction with their clinical placements.

Data was collected through questionnaires and interviews with undergraduate nursing students at various stages of their training. The study examines key factors such as the availability of clinical instructors, the adequacy of supervision, the variety of learning opportunities, and the integration of theoretical knowledge into practice. Additionally, it explores the students’ perceptions of the clinical environment, the support they receive, and the challenges encountered during their training.

Findings indicate that while most students appreciate the value of clinical learning, several challenges hinder their experience. These include inadequate supervision, limited access to clinical instructors, and insufficient exposure to diverse medical cases. Students expressed concerns about the large student-to-instructor ratio, which negatively impacted the quality of feedback and personalized learning. Additionally, the study revealed that the clinical learning environment was sometimes constrained by limited resources and overcrowded wards, making it difficult for students to practice skills effectively.

The research recommends enhancing clinical supervision by increasing the number of instructors and improving the student-to-instructor ratio. Strengthening collaboration between the university and healthcare institutions to provide more structured and diverse clinical placements could also improve the quality of learning. Regular assessments of the clinical environment and feedback mechanisms should be implemented to ensure continuous improvement in clinical training.

In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of a supportive clinical learning environment and adequate supervision for nursing students to acquire the skills and confidence necessary for professional practice.
