Abstract

The academic performance of hearing-impaired students in inclusive education settings is influenced by multiple factors. This study investigates these factors in the context of secondary schools in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. Inclusive education aims to integrate students with hearing impairments into mainstream classrooms, ensuring equal learning opportunities and fostering an inclusive environment. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from academic performance records and attendance rates with qualitative insights from interviews and focus group discussions with hearing-impaired students, their parents, teachers, and school administrators.

Findings reveal that several key factors influence the academic performance of hearing-impaired students in inclusive education. These include the availability and quality of specialized resources, teacher preparedness, classroom environment, and peer interactions. Specialized resources, such as hearing aids, sign language interpreters, and visual learning aids, are crucial for facilitating effective communication and comprehension. However, the study found that many schools lack these essential resources, adversely affecting students’ learning experiences.

Teacher preparedness is another critical factor. Many teachers in inclusive settings have not received adequate training to support hearing-impaired students effectively. This lack of training impacts their ability to adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the diverse needs of their students. The classroom environment also plays a significant role, with factors such as noise levels, seating arrangements, and lighting affecting the ability of hearing-impaired students to engage with the lesson.

Peer interactions and social inclusion are vital for the academic and emotional well-being of hearing-impaired students. Positive interactions with peers can enhance motivation and engagement, while negative experiences, such as bullying or exclusion, can hinder academic performance and self-esteem.

Challenges identified in the study include insufficient funding for inclusive education programs, lack of specialized training for teachers, inadequate provision of assistive technologies, and social stigma associated with hearing impairments. Addressing these challenges requires a multi-faceted approach, including increased investment in inclusive education, comprehensive teacher training programs, and raising awareness about hearing impairments to foster a more inclusive and supportive school culture.

Recommendations for policymakers and educational authorities include increasing funding for inclusive education, ensuring the availability of specialized resources and assistive technologies, and implementing mandatory training for teachers on inclusive education practices. Additionally, promoting a positive school culture through awareness campaigns and peer support programs can enhance the social inclusion of hearing-impaired students.

In conclusion, the academic performance of hearing-impaired students in inclusive education settings in Buea Municipality is influenced by multiple factors, including resource availability, teacher preparedness, classroom environment, and peer interactions. By addressing the identified challenges and implementing the study’s recommendations, schools can create a more supportive and effective learning environment for hearing-impaired students, leading to improved academic outcomes and overall well-being.
