Abstract
This study examines the factors affecting shorthand exam performance in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. Shorthand is essential for secretaries and administrative professionals. Success in exams requires a strong mastery of the skill. Many students face challenges that impact their performance. This study seeks to identify those challenges and propose solutions.
A mixed-methods approach was used. Quantitative surveys were conducted among students in training institutions. Qualitative interviews were also held with instructors. Data collection focused on their experiences with shorthand instruction. The study examined factors such as instructional quality, resource availability, and student motivation. Exam preparation strategies and institutional support were also analyzed.
The findings indicate that instructional quality significantly affects student performance. Clear, practical shorthand lessons lead to better results. In contrast, outdated teaching methods contribute to poor performance. Resource availability, such as textbooks and audio aids, is also crucial. Students with access to these resources perform better in exams.
Student motivation is another key factor. Students with a positive attitude toward shorthand tend to excel. Those who view the subject as difficult show lower performance. Effective exam preparation strategies also impact success. Regular practice, mock exams, and time management play a vital role.
Institutional support is equally important. Institutions that provide modern equipment and resources improve student performance. Digital transcription machines and audiovisual aids enhance learning outcomes. Regular feedback and encouragement from instructors also boost student confidence and readiness.
In conclusion, improving shorthand exam performance requires a comprehensive approach. Recommendations include enhancing teaching quality and updating instructional materials. Institutions should also increase access to practice resources. Fostering a supportive learning environment is crucial. These actions will help students excel in shorthand exams and succeed in their careers.
