HARNESSING TOURISTIC POTENTIALS TOWARDS LOCAL DEVELOPMENT IN MBENGWI SUBDIVISION, CAMEROON

ABSTRACT

This study explores how harnessing touristic potentials can drive local development in Mbengwi Subdivision, Cameroon. The region is rich in cultural heritage, natural beauty, and historical significance. This research aims to identify the existing tourism resources and assess their potential for fostering economic growth, social development, and environmental sustainability.

Using a mixed-methods approach, this study combines quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews. Surveys target local residents, business owners, and tourists to gather data on perceptions, experiences, and expectations related to tourism in the area. Interviews with key stakeholders, including local government officials and tourism operators, provide insights into current practices and future opportunities.

Findings indicate that Mbengwi possesses significant touristic attractions, including cultural festivals, traditional crafts, and scenic landscapes. However, tourism in the region remains underdeveloped due to various challenges, such as inadequate infrastructure, limited marketing efforts, and a lack of community engagement in tourism initiatives.

The study highlights the importance of infrastructure development, such as roads, accommodations, and communication facilities. Improved infrastructure can enhance accessibility for both tourists and local residents. Additionally, strategic marketing campaigns are essential to promote Mbengwi’s unique offerings to a broader audience.

Furthermore, community involvement is crucial for sustainable tourism development. Engaging local communities in planning and decision-making processes ensures that tourism benefits are equitably distributed. Training programs can equip residents with skills to participate in the tourism sector, fostering entrepreneurship and job creation.

The research emphasizes that tourism should align with local culture and environment. Sustainable tourism practices can preserve cultural heritage and natural resources while generating income for local communities. This approach promotes environmental stewardship and enhances the region’s attractiveness to visitors.

In conclusion, harnessing the touristic potentials of Mbengwi Subdivision presents a pathway to local development.
