Abstract
This study explores household solid waste management practices, problems, and prospects in Limbe, Cameroon. Effective waste management is crucial for public health, environmental sustainability, and the overall well-being of communities. The increasing population and urbanization in Limbe have led to higher volumes of household waste, posing significant challenges to the city’s waste management systems. The research focuses on the current practices adopted by households for waste disposal, the major problems faced in managing solid waste, and potential solutions for improving waste management in Limbe.
Data was collected through field surveys, interviews with households and municipal officials, and direct observation of waste management practices in different neighborhoods of Limbe. The study examined waste generation, segregation, collection, transportation, and disposal methods used by households. Key issues such as inadequate infrastructure, limited awareness of proper waste management practices, and the absence of effective recycling programs were analyzed.
Findings indicate that most households in Limbe rely on unsanitary methods for waste disposal, such as open dumping and burning. The city faces challenges like irregular waste collection services, insufficient waste bins, and the lack of a structured recycling system. Additionally, there is a low level of public awareness about the environmental and health impacts of improper waste management. The study also found that while the government has made efforts to address these issues, such as establishing waste collection points, these measures are often inadequate and poorly enforced.
The study identifies several prospects for improving solid waste management in Limbe. These include increasing public education on waste management, investing in better waste collection infrastructure, and promoting recycling initiatives. Community engagement and partnerships between the government, private sector, and non-governmental organizations could also play a key role in enhancing waste management practices.
In conclusion, the research highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle household solid waste management issues in Limbe. Addressing the challenges requires a combination of public awareness, infrastructure development, and stronger policy enforcement to ensure environmental sustainability and better living conditions.
