Settlement expansion and its impact on farmland dynamics are critical global issues with far-reaching implications for sustainable development, food security, and environmental conservation. As the global population continues to grow, the demand for land for housing, infrastructure, and urban development intensifies, resulting in the conversion of agricultural lands into built-up areas. The expansion of human settlements worldwide has been a defining feature of the modern era. Rapid population growth, rural-urban migration, and economic development have fueled the growth of cities and towns, leading to the encroachment of built-up areas onto agricultural lands. This encroachment often results in the loss or fragmentation of farmlands, disruption of traditional land use patterns, and the displacement of rural communities. At a global level, the world is experiencing rapid urbanization and population growth. This phenomenon has led to increased pressure on existing urban areas and the expansion of human settlements into previously rural or agricultural areas. This trend has significant implications for land use, including the conversion of farmland into residential and commercial areas. Additionally, the conversion of farmlands into urban areas have adverse consequences for food production, rural livelihoods, and ecological systems.
Africa is undergoing a profound transformation characterized by urbanization and the expansion of cities and towns. The continent’s population is projected to double by 2050 (UN, 2017), leading to a surge in the demand for housing, infrastructure, and urban services. Farmlands are being converted into built-up areas, because of this conversion, it may lead to the loss of productive farmlands and the fragmentation of rural landscapes. The consequences of this expansion are multifaceted, impacting food production, employment opportunities, and the resilience of rural communities. In Africa, urbanization is also occurring at a significant pace. Many African countries are witnessing the growth of cities and towns, resulting in the conversion of farmland for housing, infrastructure, and industrial purposes. The expansion of human settlements and its impact on farmland dynamics is a pressing issue in many regions including Cameroon.
Cameroon, located in Central Africa, is a country characterized by diverse ecosystems and a rich agricultural heritage. Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of Cameroon with about 80% of the population actively involved in agriculture. However, rapid population growth, urbanization, and socio-economic changes have led to the expansion of human settlements and the subsequent transformation of farmlands. As residential areas encroach upon farmlands, the dynamics of agricultural production, land use patterns, and rural communities are being significantly altered.
The North West Region of Cameroon, known for its agricultural potential, is experiencing a significant increase in population and urbanization. The expansion of human settlements in Santa Sub Division has led to the encroachment of residential areas into farmland. The North west region has witnessed an increase in population especially in towns like Bamenda and Kumbo. This has increased pressure on the available settlements. Leading to vertical and horizontal settlement expansion. Many settlements have emerged in areas that were reserved for farming thereby reducing the farm sizes and influencing the intensity in the cultivation of certain crops. The conversion of farmlands into built-up areas has implications on farm size and the quantity of crops produced. Santa Sub Division is known for its fertile soils and favorable climatic conditions, making it an important agricultural area in the North West Region of Cameroon. However, the increasing population, urbanization, and changing socio-economic dynamics have led to the expansion of human settlements and subsequent transformations in land use patterns.
Understanding the complex relationship between human settlement expansion and farmlands dynamics in Santa Sub-division is crucial for sustainable land management, urban planning, and the preservation of agricultural resources. By examining the spatial and temporal patterns of human settlement expansion and its impact on farmlands, this study aims to contribute to the existing knowledge on land use change, urbanization, and agricultural landscapes specifically within Santa Sub-division. This study addresses several key research questions, including the assessment of the change in farmlands resulting from human settlement expansion. It will investigate the factors contributing to human settlement expansion in Santa Sub-division and assess the impact of human settlement expansion on farmland in Santa Sub division. The study will investigate the implications of human settlement expansion on food security, agricultural productivity, and the livelihoods of rural communities in Santa Sub-division and propose measures that can be taken to reduce the encroachment of human settlement into farmlands in Santa Sub-division.

1.3 Statement of Research Problem
The rapid expansion of human settlements in Santa Sub Division may have been caused by population growth and changing socio-economic dynamics or economic development which result from the impact of urbanization. An increase in the population of Santa Dub Division and economic development have far reaching implications on agricultural land. Analyzing the factors contributing to urbanization like population growth, infrastructural development will help us to gain more knowledge into the forces propelling human settlement expansion and the changes associated with them. The rapid expansion of human settlements and its impact on farmlands poses a significant problem in understanding the evolving relationship between urbanization and farming land. As populations continue to grow, there is an increasing demand for land to accommodate housing, infrastructure, and commercial activities. This expansion often encroaches upon farm land, leading to its conversion and fragmentation. The study lies in examining the factors, impact, and the measures to reduce this incident of human settlement encroachment into farmlands.
Human settlement expansion and encroachment into farmland bring about negative effects on the environment the environmental consequences of human settlement expansion on farmland include issues related to deforestation, habitat loss and soil degradation. So, this study will propose strategies that can be implemented to mitigate the effects of settlement expansion on farmland and promote sustainable land. This could explore potential solutions such as zoning regulations, agroforestry and urban agriculture.
Agricultural productivity and farmland quality reduces due to human settlement expansion. As human settlements spread out, agricultural land is converted into residential areas and commercial areas. This conversion reduces the amount of land available for farming leading to a decrease in agricultural productivity. Farmers also lose access to prime agricultural land which can impact the crops and livestock. Urbanization also contributes to land degradation through soil erosion pollution and loss of bio diversity. Human settlements generate waste that can contaminate nearby farmlands reducing soil fertility and crop yield.
By addressing these problems, a study on human settlement expansion and farmland dynamics in Santa Sub Division can contribute to a better understanding of the interaction between urban growth and agricultural land use. This can possibly inform policy development, better land use planning and sustainable development strategies.
