Abstract
This study investigates the impact of financial stress on students’ academic achievement in secondary schools within Buea Municipality, Cameroon. Financial stress, often arising from challenges such as high tuition fees, lack of financial support, and the inability to afford basic school materials, has been identified as a significant factor influencing students’ academic performance and overall well-being.
Using a mixed-methods approach, the research gathers data from students, teachers, and school administrators across various public and private schools in Buea Municipality. Quantitative data is collected through surveys and academic records, while qualitative insights are gained through interviews and focus group discussions with students facing financial difficulties. The study also considers the role of socio-economic factors and family background in shaping students’ educational experiences.
Preliminary findings suggest that financial stress has a direct negative effect on students’ academic achievement. Students under financial strain often experience heightened anxiety, reduced concentration, and limited access to learning resources, which in turn affect their academic performance. Additionally, financial difficulties can lead to absenteeism, dropout, and lower levels of academic engagement, further compounding the challenges these students face.
The research also highlights the coping mechanisms employed by students, such as part-time work and reliance on financial aid or scholarships. However, these strategies are often insufficient to fully mitigate the negative effects of financial stress on academic outcomes. The study underscores the need for greater support from schools, the government, and communities to address the financial barriers that hinder students’ educational success.
The research concludes that financial stress is a significant determinant of academic performance in schools in Buea Municipality. Addressing this issue requires comprehensive interventions, including increased financial aid, affordable education policies, and the provision of essential resources for students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. By alleviating financial stress, schools can create a more equitable environment that promotes academic success for all students.
