ABSTRACT

This study examines the influence of parental guidance on teenage pregnancy rates within Buea Municipality, highlighting the critical role that parents play in shaping adolescent sexual behaviors. The primary objective is to determine how parental involvement impacts the incidence of teenage pregnancies, considering the interplay of socioeconomic factors, educational influence, and community resources.

The research utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data on teenage pregnancy rates with qualitative insights from parents, teenagers, educators, and community leaders. Specific objectives include assessing the effectiveness of parental communication and supervision, analyzing the impact of socioeconomic status on parental guidance, evaluating the role of sexual education programs, and identifying effective community support mechanisms.

Preliminary findings suggest that open and honest parental communication significantly reduces risky sexual behaviors among teens. However, socioeconomic challenges often limit parents’ ability to effectively guide their children. School-based sexual education has shown potential, particularly when supported by active parental involvement.

The study underscores the need for comprehensive community-based interventions that include educational, economic, and social support components to enhance parental guidance and reduce teenage pregnancies in Buea Municipality. This research contributes to the ongoing discussion about adolescent sexual health and the pivotal role of family and community in preventing teenage pregnancy.

CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The role of parental guidance in shaping adolescent behavior is a critical factor in the development and well-being of teenagers, particularly concerning issues like teenage pregnancy. In Buea Municipality, the impact of family structure and parental involvement on adolescent sexual behaviors has become a focal point for social research. This interest stems from the rising concerns over the rates of teenage pregnancy and the associated social, economic, and health outcomes that affect the community (Smith, 2020).

Studies have demonstrated that strong parental guidance and communication about sexuality play significant roles in delaying sexual initiation among teenagers and in promoting safer sexual practices. In regions like Buea, where cultural and socioeconomic factors intertwine, the influence of parents becomes even more crucial. Teenagers who report having open, honest conversations with their parents about sex are less likely to engage in risky sexual activities (Johnson & Stewart, 2021).
