Abstract
Teacher training is a crucial factor influencing the quality of education and students’ academic achievements. This study investigates the impact of teacher training on the academic performance of students in secondary schools in Buea, Cameroon. The objective is to assess how professional development and training programs for teachers affect student outcomes and educational quality.
The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Surveys and academic performance records are used to gather quantitative data from teachers and students, while interviews and focus groups provide qualitative insights into the experiences of educators and their perceptions of the training’s impact. The study focuses on various aspects of teacher training, including instructional strategies, classroom management, and subject-specific pedagogical skills.
Findings indicate a positive correlation between teacher training and student academic achievements. Teachers who participate in comprehensive training programs are better equipped with modern instructional techniques, effective classroom management strategies, and updated subject knowledge. This enhanced skill set translates into improved teaching practices, which, in turn, positively influences student engagement and academic performance. Schools with well-trained teachers report higher student grades and overall better academic outcomes compared to those with less emphasis on professional development.
Challenges identified include insufficient training opportunities, lack of follow-up support, and limited resources for implementing new techniques. Addressing these challenges requires a more structured approach to teacher training, including ongoing professional development, mentorship programs, and adequate resources to support the application of new skills in the classroom.
Recommendations from the study suggest that educational authorities in Buea should enhance teacher training programs by focusing on continuous professional development and providing practical support for teachers. Schools should invest in regular workshops, in-service training, and peer collaboration to reinforce new teaching methods and strategies. Additionally, creating a feedback mechanism to evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and their impact on student achievements can further improve educational outcomes.
In conclusion, teacher training significantly impacts students’ academic achievements in secondary schools in Buea. By investing in effective training programs and addressing implementation challenges, educational stakeholders can enhance teaching quality and improve student performance, ultimately leading to better educational outcomes.
