For instance, Christopher (2016) emphasizes that effective warehousing contributes to reduced lead times and improved customer service, which are crucial for maintaining a competitive edge in the European market. Furthermore, Rushton, Croucher, and Baker (2017) highlight the significance of warehouse automation and technology adoption in optimizing storage capacity and improving order fulfillment accuracy. According to Hines (2013), European companies are increasingly investing in advanced warehousing systems to streamline their operations and minimize operational costs. Furthermore, the integration of warehousing with transportation networks enhances the agility and responsiveness of supply chains (McKinnon, Cullinane, Freitag, & Whiteing, 2015). Wanke (2019) highlights that warehousing practices must be dynamically adapted to meet evolving customer expectations and market demands. These authors stress that effective warehousing contributes to reduced lead times and improved customer service, which are crucial for maintaining a competitive edge in the European market. This is further strengthened by the European Union’s focus on creating a streamlined and efficient logistics network (European Commission, 2020). The evolution of e-commerce has placed unprecedented demands on European warehousing facilities, necessitating investments in automation, robotics, and advanced inventory management systems to meet the surge in order volumes and ensure timely delivery (Bartholdi & Hackman, 2014). The effective management of warehouse operations is essential for sustaining competitiveness and achieving long-term success in the European marketplace (Frazelle, 2016).
Across the Atlantic, warehousing is viewed as a critical component of the supply chain, driving both efficiency and customer satisfaction for American businesses. Ballou (2004) asserts that strategic warehousing decisions directly impact inventory holding costs, transportation expenses, and order cycle times, influencing overall profitability. Lambert (2008) emphasizes the importance of warehouse network design and location selection in optimizing supply chain responsiveness and minimizing distribution costs across the vast American landscape. Bowersox, Closs, Cooper, and Bowersox (2013) highlight that the effective management of warehouse operations is essential for sustaining competitiveness and achieving long-term success in the American marketplace. Furthermore, Mentzer (2001) points out that advanced warehouse management systems (WMS) are essential for improving inventory accuracy, reducing errors, and enhancing order fulfillment rates, especially in the context of complex and diverse product portfolios. Additionally, Chopra and Meindl (2016) underline the significance of cross-docking and other innovative warehousing techniques in accelerating product flow and minimizing storage requirements, which are particularly relevant for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies in America. The application of simulation models enables American businesses to optimize warehouse layout, storage strategies, and material handling equipment selection, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and throughput capacity (Banks, Carson, Nelson, & Nicol, 2009). Moreover, the growth of e-commerce has placed unprecedented demands on American warehousing facilities, necessitating investments in automation, robotics, and advanced inventory management systems to meet the surge in order volumes and ensure timely delivery (Frazelle, 2016).
In the rapidly developing economies of Asia, warehousing is becoming increasingly recognized as a vital element for supporting economic growth and international trade. Tan (2013) emphasizes that efficient warehousing operations are essential for facilitating the smooth flow of goods in and out of Asian countries, contributing to export competitiveness and economic development. Waters (2003) highlights the need for Asian businesses to invest in modern warehousing infrastructure and technologies to keep pace with increasing global trade volumes. Chopra and Sodhi (2014) point out that the optimization of warehouse locations and network design is crucial for minimizing transportation costs and improving supply chain responsiveness in the diverse and geographically dispersed Asian market. Furthermore, Lee (2012) stresses that the adoption of lean warehousing practices is essential for reducing waste, improving efficiency, and enhancing customer satisfaction in Asian logistics operations. Handfield and Nichols (2002) underline the importance of integrating warehousing with e-commerce platforms and last-mile delivery services to meet the growing demands of online consumers in Asian countries. In particular, the rise of mega-cities and industrial hubs has put a premium on effective warehousing solutions to manage urban congestion and facilitate the timely delivery of goods to consumers and businesses (Ogden, 2016). For instance, the establishment of free trade zones and bonded warehouses in Asian countries has streamlined customs procedures and reduced trade barriers, thereby promoting economic growth and regional integration (World Trade Organization, 2018).
Warehousing in Africa presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities due to the continent’s diverse economic landscape and infrastructural limitations. Christopher and Towill (2001) observe that inadequate warehousing infrastructure and inefficient logistics processes hinder the smooth flow of goods and contribute to high supply chain costs. Echendu (2004) emphasizes the need for African businesses to invest in modern warehousing facilities and technologies to improve operational efficiency and reduce post-harvest losses. According to Mangan and Lalwani (2016), the optimization of warehouse locations and inventory management practices is critical for overcoming logistical constraints and enhancing supply chain resilience in the African context. In addition, Lysons and Gillingham (2003) argue that the implementation of warehouse management systems (WMS) is essential for improving inventory accuracy, reducing stockouts, and enhancing customer service in African supply chains. Porter (1985) highlights the importance of developing strategic partnerships and collaborations between warehousing providers, logistics companies, and government agencies to improve overall supply chain effectiveness and support economic development across the African continent. A key area of focus for African countries is the development of agricultural warehousing facilities to reduce post-harvest losses and ensure food security (Da Silva, 2013). Also, the development of warehousing facilities to support the growth of intra-African trade, as facilitated by initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), is critical for promoting economic diversification and industrialization (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, 2020).
Cameroon, like many other African nations, faces significant challenges in developing an efficient and effective warehousing sector. Ndi (2017) highlight that the lack of modern warehousing infrastructure, coupled with bureaucratic hurdles and poor transportation networks, hampers the competitiveness of Cameroonian businesses. A study by Fongwa and Akwa (2010) reveals that many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Cameroon rely on outdated warehousing techniques, leading to high storage costs and increased risk of product damage. Research by Forbi and Tiku (2018) identifies that the lack of skilled personnel and limited training opportunities further constrain the development of the warehousing sector in Cameroon. Despite these challenges, there is growing recognition of the strategic importance of warehousing for supporting economic growth and enhancing the competitiveness of Cameroonian businesses (National Institute of Statistics, 2019). The growth in agribusiness and export sectors has further highlighted the need to develop efficient warehousing solutions to support Cameroonian businesses.
African Global Logistics (AGL), as a key player in the logistics industry, operates within this complex and dynamic environment. AGL faces both opportunities and challenges in leveraging warehousing to enhance its organizational performance. To effectively manage its operations, AGL must navigate infrastructural limitations, bureaucratic processes, and competitive pressures, (AGL Annual Report, 2022). Given the diverse range of goods AGL handles, optimizing warehouse layout, inventory management, and material handling processes is crucial for improving operational efficiency and reducing costs. Furthermore, AGL needs to invest in advanced warehouse management systems (WMS) and technologies to enhance inventory accuracy, streamline order fulfillment, and improve customer service. By adopting best practices in warehousing and supply chain management, AGL can strengthen its competitive position and contribute to the economic development of the regions in which it operates. By developing tailored warehousing solutions that cater to the specific needs of its clients, AGL can foster long-term relationships and enhance customer satisfaction (AGL Customer Satisfaction Survey, 2023). The growth in AGL’s operations across Africa highlights the potential for warehousing to support economic growth and regional integration. The company’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility further strengthens its reputation and contributes to its long-term success (AGL Sustainability Report, 2021). This study aims to investigate how AGL’s warehousing practices impact its organizational performance and to identify areas for improvement and optimization.
1.2 Problem Statement
Warehousing plays a critical role in the supply chain, influencing order fulfillment, inventory management, and overall logistics costs. For African Global Logistics (AGL), an organization operating in a dynamic and often challenging African market, the efficiency and effectiveness of its warehousing operations are particularly crucial for achieving sustainable competitive advantage and delivering reliable services to its clients. While AGL has invested in warehousing infrastructure, the extent to which these investments translate into tangible improvements in organizational performance remains unclear. Understanding the specific impact of warehousing on AGL’s performance requires careful investigation into its current practices and outcomes.
Currently, AGL’s warehousing operations is experiencing several issues hindering optimal performance. These include inefficient space utilization, leading to higher storage costs and difficulty in accessing goods. Inadequate inventory management practices that result in stockouts, delays, and ultimately, dissatisfied customers. Furthermore, outdated technology and manual processes within the warehouse could be contributing to errors, increased processing times, and reduced overall throughput. Lack of integration between the warehousing system and other organizational systems, such as transportation and order management, can further exacerbate these problems and disrupt the flow of goods.
The consequences of these warehousing inefficiencies for AGL are potentially significant. Diminished customer satisfaction due to order delays and errors can erode customer loyalty and impact future revenue streams. Elevated operational costs associated with inefficient processes, wasted space, and inaccurate inventory contribute to lower profit margins. Furthermore, a poorly performing warehousing function can hinder AGL’s ability to respond effectively to changing market demands and capitalize on new business opportunities. The cumulative effect of these issues could ultimately jeopardize AGL’s competitive position within the African logistics market.
Therefore, there is a need to assess the impact of AGL’s warehousing operations on its organizational performance. This research should identify specific areas of strength and weakness within AGL’s current warehousing practices. The findings should then inform the development of targeted recommendations for improvement, focusing on optimizing space utilization, implementing effective inventory management systems, adopting relevant technologies, and enhancing integration across the supply chain.
