CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

In the developed world, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has revolutionized various sectors, including sales and business operations. The integration of ICT tools such as Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems, big data analytics, and cloud computing has significantly enhanced sales performance by streamlining processes, improving customer engagement, and providing valuable insights into consumer behavior1. Studies have shown that businesses leveraging ICT technologies tend to achieve higher productivity, profitability, and competitive advantage (Hunter, 2006; Perreault, 2007).

Countries like the United States, Germany, and Japan have seen significant advancements in ICT adoption, leading to improved sales performance and business efficiency. For instance, in the United States, the integration of ICT tools such as Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems and big data analytics has significantly enhanced sales processes and customer engagement (Hunter, 2006; Perreault, 2007). Similarly, Germany and Japan have leveraged ICT to streamline operations and gain a competitive edge in the global market (UNCTAD, 2008)

In the United States, for instance, sectors that heavily invested in ICT, such as wholesale and retail trade, experienced significant productivity growth. Multifactor productivity growth in wholesale trade accelerated from 1.5% annually to 3.1% annually between 1987-95 and 1995-2001, while in retail trade, it jumped from 0.2% annually to 2.9% (Pilat, 2004). Similar trends were observed in other developed nations like Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, where ICT-intensive sectors saw substantial increases in productivity. Shifting focus to Africa, the continent has seen a rapid growth in ICT adoption, particularly in mobile technology. Governments across Africa are promoting the digital sector through investments in ICT infrastructure and skills development, recognizing its potential to create jobs and reduce reliance on traditional exports (ITC, 2024). The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) has further encouraged governments to invest in digital infrastructure and technologies, stimulating innovation in sectors such as logistics and digital services.

In Africa, the adoption of ICT has been growing steadily, driven by the need to overcome infrastructural challenges and improve economic development. The continent has seen a surge in mobile technology usage, which has become a key driver for business innovation and growth. ICT has enabled businesses to reach wider markets, improve operational efficiency, and enhance customer service. However, the impact of ICT on sales performance varies across different regions and sectors, with some businesses experiencing significant improvements while others face barriers such as limited internet access and digital literacy (Bloom et al., 2014)

In Sub-Saharan Africa specifically, ICT has shown promising effects on various sectors. A study by Domguia and Asongu (2022) found that ICT use, measured by Internet, mobile, and fixed-line telephone penetration, significantly boosts the agricultural sector. The study also revealed that ICTs have both direct and indirect positive effects on agriculture through their impact on financial development and trade openness.

In Cameroon, the use of ICT in business operations is still evolving, with varying levels of adoption across different industries. The government and private sector have been making efforts to promote ICT infrastructure development, including expanding internet access and improving digital literacy. These initiatives aim to support businesses in leveraging ICT for better sales performance and overall growth. Despite these efforts, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, high costs, and limited technical expertise remain significant barriers to ICT adoption (Nde Ngo Solange & Fonyoh Richard Nembu, 2021).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Glotelho Douala, a leading telecommunications provider, is navigating a complex landscape where the impacts of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) are increasingly influential in determining sales performance and overall business success. Despite the potential of ICT to streamline operations, enhance customer interactions, and provide valuable data insights, Glotelho Douala faces several critical challenges that impede its ability to fully leverage these technologies. Firstly, the integration of ICT tools into the sales processes has not been optimized, resulting in inefficiencies and reduced responsiveness to market demands. This lack of seamless technology adoption often leads to missed sales opportunities and a diminished customer experience. Secondly, there is a significant skills gap among the sales team concerning the effective use of ICT. Many employees lack the necessary training and resources to utilize these technologies effectively, which not only hampers individual performance but also impacts team dynamics and overall sales outcomes.

Additionally, Glotelho Douala faces challenges in measuring the effectiveness of its ICT investments. Without robust metrics and analysis capabilities, the company struggles to assess the return on investment from its ICT initiatives, making it difficult to justify further technological expenditures or to strategize for future growth. Finally, the rapid evolution of technology poses a continuous challenge for Glotelho Douala. Keeping pace with emerging ICT trends requires ongoing adaptation and investment, which can strain financial and operational resources.

These challenges collectively hinder Glotelho Douala’s ability to harness the full potential of ICT, ultimately affecting its sales performance and growth in a competitive telecommunications market. Addressing these issues is essential for the company to remain relevant and achieve sustainable success in the digital era.
