As the global port community continues to address the challenges posed by sea tides, it is essential to prioritize collaboration, innovation, and sustainability to ensure the long-term resilience and competitiveness of ports worldwide.

Africa’s coastal regions are home to many of the continent’s most important ports, which play a critical role in facilitating international trade and economic development. However, these ports are also vulnerable to the impacts of sea tides, which can affect their safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Africa’s coastline stretches for over 46,000 kilometers, with many countries having extensive coastlines along the Atlantic, Indian, and Mediterranean oceans (African Development Bank, 2019). The continent’s ports handle a significant proportion of global trade, with many countries relying heavily on maritime transport for the import and export of goods. Sea tides have significant implications for African ports, affecting their safety, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability. These ports play a critical role in facilitating international trade and economic development in Cameroon. However, they are also vulnerable to the impacts of sea tides, which can affect their safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Cameroon’s coastline stretches for approximately 400 kilometers along the Gulf of Guinea. The country’s ports handle a significant proportion of the country’s international trade, with the Port of Douala being the largest and busiest port in the country (Cameroon Ports Authority, 2020). The history of the port of Douala, was established in 1907 by the German colonial administration, and it has since undergone several expansions and modernizations. In the 1960s, the port was expanded to accommodate larger vessels, and in the 1980s, a new container terminal was built. The infrastructure of the port of Douala has a total area of approximately 200 hectares, with a quay length of 2,500 meters.

 The port has 12 berths, including 4 container berths, 2 oil berths, and 6 general cargo berths. The port also has a range of facilities, including warehouses, cranes, and tugboats. The Port of Douala operated as a multipurpose port, handling a wide range of cargo, including containers, oil, timber, and general cargo. The port is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it has a team of experienced staff and modern equipment to ensure efficient and safe operations. The Port of Douala is a critical component of Cameroon’s economy, but it faces several challenges, including congestion, infrastructure limitations, and corruption. The port is also vulnerable to the impacts of sea tides, which can affect its safety, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Addressing these challenges and mitigating the impacts of sea tides will be essential to ensuring the long-term resilience and competitiveness of the Port of Douala. 1.2 Statement of the Research Problem

The Port of Douala, Cameroon’s largest and busiest port, is facing significant challenges in its operations due to the impacts of sea tides. Despite its critical role in facilitating international trade and economic development in Cameroon, the port’s performance is being compromised by the increasing frequency and severity of sea tides. The resulting flooding, erosion, and disruption of operations are not only affecting the port’s efficiency and safety but also having negative impacts on the environment and local communities. Therefore, this research seeks to investigate the implications of sea tides at berth on the performance of the Port of Douala, with a view to identifying strategies for mitigating these impacts and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the port.
