ABSTRACT

This study examines the impacts of tourism on Cameroon’s economic, social, and environmental landscapes. Tourism has emerged as a vital sector in Cameroon, contributing significantly to the country’s GDP, job creation, and cultural exchange. The research explores both the positive and negative effects tourism has on the local population, economy, and environment, highlighting areas of improvement for sustainable tourism development.

Tourism plays a crucial role in Cameroon’s economy by boosting revenues through foreign exchange earnings and employment generation. The hospitality sector, including hotels, restaurants, and transport services, benefits significantly from the influx of tourists. The study reveals that popular destinations, such as Mount Cameroon, Waza National Park, and coastal regions, attract a diverse group of international visitors, contributing to economic growth. This growth extends to rural areas where ecotourism is emerging, helping to alleviate poverty and improve living conditions.

Socially, tourism fosters cross-cultural interactions, promoting understanding and tolerance among different communities. Tourists’ exposure to Cameroon’s rich cultural heritage, including festivals, traditional crafts, and local cuisine, enhances national pride and preserves cultural practices. However, the research notes that mass tourism sometimes leads to the commercialization of culture, where traditional practices are altered to cater to tourists’ expectations, thus diluting their authenticity.

On the environmental front, the study identifies both beneficial and detrimental impacts. Tourism encourages the conservation of wildlife and natural habitats, especially in national parks and protected areas. Revenues from tourism often fund conservation efforts and support local communities dependent on natural resources. Conversely, tourism-related activities contribute to environmental degradation, such as pollution, deforestation, and habitat destruction, particularly in unregulated areas. This degradation threatens biodiversity and the sustainability of tourism itself.

The research concludes that while tourism is a key driver of economic and social progress in Cameroon, there are significant challenges that need addressing. These include environmental protection, infrastructure development, and ensuring that tourism benefits are equitably distributed among communities. Sustainable tourism practices, such as eco-friendly accommodations and responsible travel initiatives, are recommended to minimize the negative impacts while enhancing the positive contributions of tourism.
