ABSTRACT
This study assesses the implementation of school feeding programs and their impact on the psychological development of children in primary schools in Buea, Cameroon. School feeding programs are designed to provide nutritional support to children, which is essential for their physical, cognitive, and psychological development. These programs can improve attention, memory, and overall mental well-being, thereby enhancing children’s academic performance and social behaviors. The research aims to explore how the availability and quality of these programs influence the psychological development of children in Buea.
A mixed-method approach was used, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Surveys were conducted with teachers, school administrators, and parents to collect data on the implementation and effects of school feeding programs. Qualitative interviews were carried out with selected stakeholders to gain insights into how these programs affect children’s emotional and psychological well-being. The study also reviewed literature on school feeding programs and child development to establish a theoretical framework for the research findings.
The results reveal that the implementation of school feeding programs significantly contributes to the psychological development of children in primary schools in Buea. Children who participated in the feeding programs showed improved concentration, better social interactions, and enhanced emotional stability. Teachers reported fewer behavioral issues and higher levels of engagement from children who had access to regular, nutritious meals. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, irregular meal provision, and poor-quality food were noted as barriers to fully realizing the benefits of these programs.
The study concludes that school feeding programs are crucial for supporting the psychological development of children in primary schools. Recommendations include ensuring consistent funding, improving the quality and nutritional value of meals, and expanding the program to reach more children. These steps will help maximize the positive effects of the program on children’s mental and emotional development in Buea.
