INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Study

The preservation of touristic values is essential for sustaining the cultural heritage and natural resources that attract visitors worldwide (UNWTO, 2019). Local communities play a pivotal role in this process, as they are the stewards of their own cultural and environmental assets (Manyara & Jones, 2007). Their involvement not only ensures the authenticity of the tourism experience but also fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the preservation of these values (Mbaiwa, 2005).

Local communities are often the first line of defense against the degradation of cultural and natural sites (Stronza & Gordillo, 2008). They possess unique knowledge and traditions that can enhance the visitor experience and contribute to sustainable tourism practices (Zeppel, 2006). However, the pressures of modern tourism—such as commercialization, environmental degradation, and cultural dilution—can threaten the very values that make a destination appealing (Hall, 2010).

The preservation of touristic values in Africa is significantly influenced by the involvement of local communities (Akama & Kieti, 2007). These communities are not only custodians of cultural heritage and natural resources but also play a crucial role in ensuring that tourism development is sustainable and beneficial to all stakeholders involved (Mitchell & Faal, 2008).

The preservation of touristic values in Cameroon is significantly influenced by the active participation of local communities (Kimbu & Tichaawa, 2018). These communities are integral to maintaining the cultural and natural resources that attract tourists, and their involvement is essential for sustainable tourism development (Njoya & Seetaram, 2018).

The Foumban West region of Cameroon is a vibrant tapestry of cultural heritage, characterized by the rich traditions of the Bamoun people (Ndonko, 2015). This region is not only known for its historical significance but also for its artistic expressions, traditional practices, and diverse ecosystems (Fanso, 2017). As tourism continues to grow globally, the role of local communities in preserving the unique touristic values of Foumban has become increasingly important (Kimbu, 2016).

 Economic Empowerment: Community-based tourism initiatives can generate significant economic benefits. When local populations are engaged in tourism activities—such as guiding, selling crafts, and hosting visitors—they gain a stake in the preservation of their cultural and natural resources. This economic incentive motivates them to protect their heritage and environment.

 Environmental Stewardship: The traditional knowledge that local communities possess regarding land use and resource management is invaluable. Their practices contribute to sustainable tourism, ensuring that natural attractions, such as forests and wildlife, are preserved for future generations.  Iinvolving these communities in conservation efforts can enhance the ecological integrity of the region.

  Challenges and Conflicts: Despite their importance, local communities often face challenges, including marginalization in decision-making processes, land tenure issues, and cultural commodification. These challenges can hinder their ability to effectively contribute to the preservation of touristic values.

 Case Studies: Examples from the region illustrate how local communities can successfully engage in tourism while preserving their heritage. Initiatives that promote traditional crafts and cultural festivals not only attract tourists but also strengthen community bonds and cultural identity.

1.2. Statement of the Problem

The preservation of touristic values in the Foumban West region of Cameroon is increasingly challenged by external pressures and internal dynamics affecting local communities. While these communities are essential custodians of cultural and natural heritage, their roles are often undermined by economic   research aims to explore the implications of local communities on the preservation of touristic values, identifying both the challenges they face and the opportunities for enhancing their involvement in sustainable tourism practices.
