ABSTRACT
This study examines the challenges faced by children with special needs in accessing inclusive education in Cameroon. Inclusive education is designed to ensure that all children, regardless of their physical, intellectual, or emotional conditions, receive equal opportunities in learning environments. However, children with special needs often encounter barriers that hinder their educational progress and social integration. The research aims to identify these challenges and suggest possible solutions to improve the inclusiveness of education in Cameroon.
A mixed-method approach was adopted, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Surveys were conducted with teachers, parents, and school administrators to gather information on the current state of inclusive education and the difficulties experienced by children with special needs. In-depth interviews with special needs educators and parents provided further insights into the specific obstacles these children face. The study also reviewed literature on inclusive education to contextualize the findings and propose strategies for improvement.
The findings reveal that children with special needs in Cameroon face significant challenges in inclusive education. These include a lack of specialized teaching materials, inadequate training for teachers, and physical infrastructure that is not accessible to children with disabilities. Additionally, social stigma and a lack of awareness about disabilities contribute to the marginalization of these children within the school environment. Teachers often lack the necessary skills and resources to support children with special needs effectively, while parents face difficulties in advocating for their children’s rights.
The study concludes that addressing these challenges is crucial for achieving truly inclusive education in Cameroon. Recommendations include providing specialized teacher training, improving school infrastructure to accommodate children with disabilities, and raising awareness about the importance of inclusion. Strengthening government policies and ensuring their implementation is also necessary to support children with special needs and improve their educational experiences.
