Abstract
Inclusive education is an essential aspect of modern educational systems, ensuring that all students, regardless of their abilities or disabilities, have access to quality education. This study examines the practices of inclusive education and the implementation of curricula in public secondary schools in Bamenda, Cameroon. The research aims to assess how well inclusive education is integrated into the school curriculum and to identify the challenges and successes of its implementation.
A mixed-methods approach was employed, utilizing both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with teachers, school administrators, students, and parents. The study explores the current state of inclusive education in selected public secondary schools, focusing on how curricula are adapted to meet the diverse needs of students, including those with disabilities and learning difficulties. It also evaluates the level of teacher preparedness and the availability of resources necessary for effective inclusive education.
The findings reveal that while there is a commitment to inclusive education in public secondary schools in Bamenda, significant challenges hinder its full implementation. These challenges include inadequate teacher training in inclusive education strategies, a lack of specialized resources and materials, and limited support for teachers and students. Despite these obstacles, some schools have developed innovative practices to accommodate students with special needs, including individualized learning plans and peer support systems.
However, the study also highlights the inconsistency in the application of inclusive education practices across different schools, with some institutions better equipped and more proactive in implementing inclusive curricula than others. This disparity often results in unequal educational experiences for students with special needs.
The study recommends that educational authorities in Bamenda strengthen inclusive education practices by providing comprehensive training for teachers, ensuring that schools are equipped with the necessary resources, and fostering a supportive environment for both students and educators. Additionally, the development of clear policies and guidelines on curriculum adaptation for inclusive education is essential to ensure consistent and effective implementation across all public secondary schools.
In conclusion, inclusive education practices are crucial for the equitable delivery of education in Bamenda’s public secondary schools. By addressing the challenges identified in this study, stakeholders can improve curriculum implementation, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to succeed academically.
