Abstract

The issue of child abuse in secondary schools is a serious concern that can have long-lasting effects on the well-being of students. This study examines the relationship between the incompetency of school management and the prevalence of child abuse in secondary schools within the Buea Municipality, Cameroon. Effective school management is critical in creating a safe and nurturing environment for students; however, when management is incompetent or negligent, it can lead to an environment where abuse is more likely to occur.

The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative research methods to provide a comprehensive analysis. Qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with teachers, school administrators, students, and parents. These discussions aimed to explore the extent of child abuse in schools, the role of school authorities in preventing or exacerbating such incidents, and the overall impact of management decisions on school safety. The study also delves into specific cases of child abuse and how they were handled by the school authorities, revealing gaps in management practices that contribute to the problem.

Quantitative data were gathered through surveys distributed to students, teachers, and parents in selected secondary schools in Buea. The surveys focused on measuring perceptions of school management competency, the prevalence of child abuse, and the effectiveness of measures put in place to prevent and address abuse cases. Statistical analysis was used to determine correlations between management incompetency and the frequency of reported abuse cases. Additional data from local education authorities and child protection agencies were used to contextualize the findings.

The results of the study show that there is a significant relationship between incompetent school management and the prevalence of child abuse in secondary schools in Buea. Poor leadership, inadequate training of staff, and lack of clear policies and procedures for addressing abuse contribute to a culture of negligence, where students are at greater risk of being abused. The study also highlights the failure of some school authorities to take swift and appropriate action when abuse cases are reported, further compromising the safety and well-being of students.

In addition, the research identifies key factors contributing to management incompetency, including lack of proper training for school administrators, insufficient oversight from higher educational authorities, and limited resources to implement child protection measures effectively. The study emphasizes the need for urgent reforms in school management practices to ensure that schools are safe environments for all students.

In conclusion, the incompetency of school management significantly impacts the prevalence of child abuse in secondary schools in Buea Municipality. Addressing this issue requires a multifaceted approach, including improving the training of school leaders, implementing clear child protection policies, and ensuring accountability at all levels of school administration. Future research could explore the role of government and non-governmental organizations in strengthening child protection in schools across Cameroon.
